In fact, the majority of riders decided to wait until the afternoon before emerging from their pit boxes, with the final hour seeing most of the entire day.s action. Fortuna Yamaha rider Toni Elías, who celebrated his 22nd birthday today, was again on good form as he took the opportunity to work on a wet setting for his YZR M1. After 52 laps the Fortuna Yamaha rider was fourteenth fastest with a best time of 1.43.813. His team-mate Ruben Xaus was the first rider out on track this morning whilst the majority of other riders waited for the rain to clear. The Spaniard rode consistently well for a total of 30 laps and set a best time if 1.43.813, thirteenth fastest overall. The fastest time today was set by Kawasaki rider Shinya Nakano, who stopped the clock at 1.42.112, followed closely by Nicky Hayden (Honda, 1.42.139) and Sete Gibernau (Honda,1.41.273).

Rubén Xaus, (1.43.756, 13th fastest, 30 laps)

"I went out early to check the Yamaha's performance in the wet. My lap times were around 1.55 and I think that's a decent reference should it rain here in the opening Grand Prix of the season. In general I like the way the bike behaves in the wet and I got a good feeling from it. It's only a couple of weeks before the start of the championship and nobody wants to risk anything. Basically I'm satisfied with today and I'll be looking for more tomorrow."

Toni Elias (1’43.813, 14th fastest, 52 laps)

"It was a really strange day. We couldn't test everything we had planned because of the conditions although at least we were able to work with the Yamaha in the wet. Everybody was slower today but hopefully the weather will improve tomorrow because we are planning to do a race simulation."
