Duke to Guest at Onchan Car
Racing Night
|
|
Former world champion motorcycle racer and well-known
car racer Geoff Duke is expected to be in the audience tomorrow (Wednesday) at
the Friends of Onchan's Heritage slide presentation on car racing in
Onchan.
The speaker will be expert Brian Crookall, who will talk on the
pre and post-World War Two races that passed through different parts of the
village.
Geoff took part in the post-war races. He drove an Aston Martin
DB3 in the 1952 British Empire Trophy event on the Willaston circuit.
He
eventually managed to overtake Duncan Hamilton's Jaguar and was leading the
race when his car cut out going down Avondale Road.
It was a loose wire
behind the dashboard which he managed to fix himself, only to have to retire a
couple of laps later with a broken crankshaft.
The talk is to be held in
the village hall at the top of Royal Avenue at 7.30pm and is open to the
public.
