Roger Marshall - Splashdown - 28-11-2014
Ok you guys and girls, a little poser for you.
I was chatting to a client this morning about Roger Marshall.
Eventually we started to discuss "V 4 Victory", and whether Roger rode the V4s in the TT. I didn't think he had at first, but then it was pointed out to me that Roger was runner up to Joey in the 1984 Formula One race. Thus, surely he rode a V4 750 that day?
Although I was riding the TT in 1984, I didn't have an F1 bike, and just cannot remember the race.
I think that Roger rode a VF1000R in the Production race. Does that ring any bells?

1984 was my first visit to the Island, so I was green as grass and under an alcoholic haze the entire time. I remember watching V4-Victory in Duke's on Strand Street, though. It made a hell of an impression!

I think he must have done, wasn't that the first year that the cc limit was reduced to 750 from 1000? Suprised that he managed not to break it though
If I remember correctly there were a few BSA/Triumph triples dragged out of sheds to take advantage of the capacity drop?

He DNF the others
Classic TT does of course NOT refer to old bikes.

Thanks for the replies. The Classic TT was actually called "The Premier Classic TT", I seem to recall.
I will look through my Silver Replicas and remind myself of what the ACU called it, but I'm pretty sure I'm right.
I think 1984 WAS the first year the capacity limit was reduced to 750. Did Roger ride a V4 in the F1?
Did he actually start in the Production race on a VFR1000R? I just cannot recall him on a V4 that year.

Based entirely on my (slightly dodgy) memory and a bit of lateral thinking I think he must have been on a V4 for the F1.
It was listed as a Honda, he was a works rider so I think that's the only option, although I seem to remember that someone, I'm sure it wasn't Honda, had a go at producing a budget racer around the CBX750 that was available at that time.
When Sticky re-appears I'm convinced he'll have a photo that will settle it. Over to you Sticky

There's a pic on his database entry on the old site of him riding a V4 in Rothmans colours. All the old shots I'd scanned got lost when a hard drive went down a few weeks back - I'm still trying to recover as much as I can from it but haven't found any of the old ones yet

1984 may have been the year that Joey and Roger used the rs 850??.

Thanks Creg ny Baa. I reckon that Joey (and Roger) rode the 850s in 1983, same year as the film V 4 Victory.

Yes splashdown you are right regarding the rs 850, just found the programme from 1983 and Roger is entered in the formula 1 race on a 850 rs Honda. i know i should have the 84 programme somewhere.

This thread reminds me of a pub conversation a few years ago "was Roger Marshall the best rider never to have won a TT ?" Perhaps more knowledgeable folk could answer.

I would think Jason Griffiths would be near the top of the list for nearly men, 9 TT podiums runner up 4 times 45 top Ten's although he has won 3 Manx GP's. Cheers Matt

Trevor Nation was the best "nearly" man for the Senior in 1986 - had the two Rogers (Marshall and Burnett) the works Honda men well beaten, on a private RG 500, then broke down.....then Marshall broke down (chain problems) handing it to Burnett... I was so disappointed for Trevor that day.

Didn't nation bag the proddie race on the same day? I might be wrong but it rings a bell, (should know really as we were watching from quarterbridge, but the sands of time n all that)

Trevor Nation won the production race on a CBX 750 . I bought
one on the back of that. A good quick bike that upset a few GSXR's.

Don't know where the cbx 750s upset a few gsxr's but it certainly was not at the TT.

The sands of time have cleared a bit more now (well, to be honest I had a look on database) nation won big proddie race on a suzuki gsxr, that does find l ring a bell, I remember him bouncing into quarterbridge with the back wheel in the air on a slabby gsxr

I think that was the same year that he rode that bike down to Villa Real in Portugal with a spare tyre strapped on the back and got a 5th (?) place in the world F1 championship race
