Derek Minter, Senior 1960. First ever 100mph lap by a single cylinder machine, 22-24.2, 101.05.
The fastest anyone has managed since on a similar machine being Bob Heath in The Classic Manx at 21-12.5, 106.74, 1997.
No disrespect to Bob (fantastic lap), but 5.69mph doesn`t seem to be much of an improvement over 43 years considering the improvements that have been made over the years to: tyres, engine developement & the circuit is like a billiard table now, compared to 1960.
The best ever video, on board lap has to be Shaun Harris`s lap on this years TT review. So precise and fast, great commentary too! Well worth a look.

Joey 6th lap of the 1981 classic.

I have the audio record, remember these before video's
From memory (a bit rusty) the commentator mentions that,as Joey is starting his lastlap that this lap will make TT history, how little did he know.

I am going to add weight to Bob Macs lap even tho I was ahuge fan of the Mint! Great times them.

Bob Mac was personally responsible for getting me hooked on the T.T. and costing me a fortune!

1980 classic of course not 1981 Graeme Crosby won that

Re: The greatest lap ever... - Anonymous - 11-09-2003

I reckon it's Joeys lap in 1977 with a broken tank strap.

Re: The greatest lap ever... - Anonymous - 12-09-2003

Can't believe no one has mentioned these three laps. Freddie Frith's first 90mph lap in 1937 before the Mountain was widened for 1938, on a rigid Norton.
Ray Amm's 97mph lap in 1953. 97 would still be quick today on a naked long stroke Manx.
Got to mention my nephew's first sub 18 minute lap in 2002, which still blows my mind thinking about it.
And after those Bob Mac was always my absolute hero, so how about in 1961, 99.58mph on a 250 which broke John Surtees 350 lap record.
