Help needed! TZ350 - Anonymous - 20-01-2003

Needing some info folks!
The bike in Question is a TZ350 of which i believe is a Model G.
Can anyone first confirm this model if i was to say this was the Bike Kevin Mitchel rode to a race win at the NW200 around 82??(Niall Mac was second in same race)
The other query is can anyone advise on rules regarding running this machine at Pre TT classic at Billown? Tyre sizes etc!
Because there is a 16" front at the moment and am being advised this is not standard! Help anyone please! Thanks

Re: Help needed! TZ350 - Anonymous - 21-01-2003

TZ 350G was the 1979 model, the first of the "lowboy" frames.

Subsequently there was a TZ 350G, but the spec was identical.

I don't think that Kevin Mitchell would have had a new one, so probably rode an F in 82 - but, as I said, spec was the same.

If it's an original frame, watch yourself. The metal was basically ratdroppings, and the F was very prone to cracking the frame round the steering head, which has been known to detach completely, especially if used in real road races. Not designed for bumps and jumps.

As to pre-TT at Billown, I think you can use it. The only race for post-classics is 230cc to 1000cc, so you should be OK.

But check the bl**dy frame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Help needed! TZ350 - Anonymous - 21-01-2003

Oops - the above wasn't quite accurate.

The 350F was 1979, the G was 1980 and the H, the last one, was 1981.

The G differed from the F only in small engine bearing changes, and the use of the new front forks from the 250G, larger in the stanchion diameter. Meant to help the front end patter, which arose from inadequate headstock gusseting (remember the frame breakages!)but it didn't really work.

Since 1982 was the last year of the 350 World Championship, the 350H of 1981 was identical to the G, and was the last Yamaha 350 TZ produced.

Wheels of all were 18 inchers.

BUT - check the frame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Help needed! TZ350 - Anonymous - 21-01-2003

Cheers Larry the frame as you mentioned is not standard it is a Lighter alloy version i think made by Maxton? (Not too sure) but it is meant to be a lot lighter than standard!
I just dont understand why it has a 16" Front wheel?? As the bike is in exactly the same condition as it crossed the line with Kevin Mitchel at North West!
Also is there a supplier for 18" Slick tyres?
Any ideas of a forgotten era website anyone?
Once again cheers Larry

Re: Help needed! TZ350 - Anonymous - 21-01-2003

Some people preferred 16s because, I think, they steered quicker, (or better!!) than the lowboy.

Now if they'd stayed with the D or the E chassis, they wouldn't have needed to AND the standard frame would have been perfectly adequate.

I979 to 1986 I used D and E chassis with, from 1983, the six-port 350G engine, which was the last of the line.

Perfect racer for the roads!

Having said all that, I think that you can use the sixteen wheel at Billown OK.

See you there - I'll be out in the 500 and 750 Classic races.

Re: Help needed! TZ350 - Anonymous - 21-01-2003

If you're hoping to use it in Forgotten Era in England then slicks are not eligible neither are tyre warmers, nor would a 16" wheel be, as far as Im aware. The Forgotten Era club or FRC (Forgotten Racing Club) as its now known dont have a website but you could contact :-

Steve Boam
Hillside
Holt road
Hackney
Nr Matlock
Derbyshire

01629 733898 (before 9pm)

for info.

Don't get involved with Forgotten Era lot,
they have rules but they seem to make others
up as they go along !
I know I've been there !
But generally you should get the information
you need. You can always check with unmentionable
if its ok !!!! lol
