The Press always go on about the deaths at the TT, but did you ever see the reports regarding the 276 competitors that have been killed since 1979 on one river alone in Califonia, Canoe racing.
I wonder why!

Perhaps the straw bales on the river bends get soggy-----Thus rendering them the consistency of concrete..

Seriously though, we should NEVER have death in any sport but unfortunately death happens all the time and none of us knows when it is going to happen..........................................

I found these statistics for sports fatalities in the UK from 1988 - 1992. They offer some very interesting comparisons.
Swimming 191
Boating 69
Motorsports 65
Riding horses 62
Air sports 51
Mountaineering 51
Sport fishing 50
Injuries requiring hospital vists per 100,000 participants:
Rugby 440
Soccer 200
Cricket 130
Hockey 130
Skiing 130
Netball 82
Athletics 69
Motorsports 58
Of course, swimming or cricket accidents don't usually provide dramatic video for the evening news or lurid photos for the papers.

.....and 7 times as many people get killed by donkeys as in plane crashes.
I did hear that a lot more people are killed by horse-riding accidents than by motorbike accidents, but does anyone remember the ratio/percentage?
......and, so sadly, a lot more get killed in fraudulently started wars against Iraq than in any of the above.

Australian donkeys can't fly, which accounts for the Australian Bureau of Statistics reporting zero 'deaths by donkey' in the past 5 years. Compared to 2 deaths by Goanna, 16 Emu related deaths and 1 by falling Koala.

During the TT fortnight, we celebrated 50 years since the conquest of Everest. It was reported that one hundred and something people have died on that mountain since the 1953 conquest. Are there any records of the number of riders (not visitors) that have given their lives in the TT races since 1907, excluding the MGP?
