Simon Andrews Memorial Lap to raise money for charities - Malcolm - 06-04-2015 Mad Sunday, traditionally on the middle weekend of TT fortnight will, for the second time, be the date of a memorial lap to remember BSB rider Simon Andrews who died last year in May after an accident at Ireland’s North West 200.
Four charities are to benefit from donations taken at the event, they are The Joey Dunlop Foundation, the Manx Hyperbaric Chamber, the Simon Andrews Fund and Manx Breast Cancer Support. Mark Walls, who organised the first memorial lap last year said: ‘Last year was a great success and to be asked to come forward and continue the event for the fans was a great honour and very humbling. I was conscious the event should continue in accordance with the family wishes.
‘Many fans on social media last year said it would be great to do a lap to celebrate family, friends and fallen riders so this is what is now happening. The lap will still carry Simon’s name and will be part of his legacy but will now celebrate the lives of family friends and fallen riders.’ Joey Dunlop Foundation chairman Kevin Quirk said a Simon Andrews commemorative lap tee-shirt had been produced and this would raise funds for the Foundation with donations deposited in collection buckets going to the other charities. Tee shirts will be available at the grandstand on the day but ideally he hopes people may buy them before hand, if they wish to support the Foundation, to save a bottleneck on the day. The lap, which is on June 7, will start with a minute’s noise at 1.59pm before the bikes leave the TT grandstand at 2pm. Mr Quirk said the Foundation would be the authorised retailer, selling the tee-shirts at the Easter BSB meeting at Donnington Park, Scarborough, North West 200 and the TT. It will also be available from the JDF on-line shop at www.joeydunlopfoundation.com |
