Wayne Lockey - sticky - 18-06-2015

While there's still a little time I'd just like to say a few words about Wayne Lockey.

I've just been talking to him on the phone.  In the 2nd sidecar race he had 6th gear break up going through the bottom of Barregarrow.  The loss of drive chucked the outfit across the road and he clouted the kerb on the exit.  He had to do half the race in 5th as top was gone but he still got it home 7th at over 108mph average.

Respect...

Respect indeed that's some ask with a 600 at the TT with no 6th gear just to finish, let alone a top ten finish.

RE: Wayne Lockey - wsn03 - 19-06-2015

Unbelievable. With a broken gear in there I wouldn't have ridden it anywhere, let alone for a lap and a half at race speed......seriously brave with a hint of insanity. To finish in the top 10 after all that palava - clearly one to watch in the future.

6th gear into the bottom of Barregarrow!

RE: Wayne Lockey - Splashdown - 19-06-2015

Wow! Respect........I think. Not sure many solo riders would have carried on after the 6th gear BROKE UP".
Come to think of it, I'm not sure Wayne should have, in consideration of his fellow competitors, but thankfully all ended safely.

I was thinking that when Bruce Anstey hit the Kerb at the top of Bray Hill and carried on.
Lucky boy he had not cracked the rim.

Wonder if it broke up or was just a selector problem , I fancy it would be the latter

One of my favourite scary places to watch from up on the bank on the exit, until it became restricted many moons ago.

RE: Wayne Lockey - Splashdown - 19-06-2015

I watched the 1966 250 race from there. Hailwood and Stuart Graham on Honda 6s, Read Ivy Duff on Yamahas (sadly not the v4s).
But I have never forgotten the experience!!

Not too sure Eddy.  Once he'd found another gear, the first five all seemed to work OK!  Just couldn't select top.  In hindsight it may have been better to park it but he's got a 100% finishing record at the TT and his last five all top tens, so when you're pumped with adrenaline I guess you're just going to keep going!

No thanks, not for me either .. if the box locks up you have to hope the chain snaps as grabbing the clutch does nothhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhinnnnnnnnnnng at all, you're just a high speed fishtailing observer of the proceedings :o)

He's not a reckless rider, so put it down to me misinterpreting what he said.  I'm sure that if he thought he was endangering anyone (including himself) he would have parked it.  Eddy's probably right about it being a selector issue.

I had the gearbox lock up on a road bike going round the 13th once.  Can't recommend the experience....

my son got talking to wayne at the southern 100 a few years ago when he was a young lad let him sit on the outfit and talked him through it my son is now 19 and still has lot of respect for wayne and looks his times/postions up
great guy from my experiences

RE: Wayne Lockey - Alfie Noakes - 19-06-2015

Wasn't having a go at Wayne Sticky just my own view, i've been right up the chuff of a bike in front when it's let go, smell it ? - I was sat in it haha.

RE: Wayne Lockey - tigerted - 19-06-2015

Yes respect to Wayne and also to all the others that raced as well. There are no better riders for me than TT riders whatever position they finish.

RE: Wayne Lockey - matjaq - 23-06-2015

Speaking to Mark (Sayers) about it the other night he was very sanguine about carrying on, just laughed and said 'it's probably in the sump'. Rather him than me!

I'll try to remember to ask him what the exact problem was.

RE: Wayne Lockey - Steady the Edward - 23-06-2015

I had a bent selector problem on a bike years ago and you could feel it in the lever and knew it was just a case of nursing it home , if the cluster is falling apart you can hear it SHOUTING at you STOP STOP STOP or else !!
I don't think he was endangering himself or anyone else , his main problem was the danger of over reving it and the engine letting go , that is a problem with the chairs from start to finish nothing new , and exactly why slidy car teams always have a couple of spare engines tucked in the back of the van
