Who rode the finest lap?To start the ball rolling I'd like to suggest that McCallens ride on the 250 in 97 would have been the lap of all time if he'd stayed on at Quarry...

Re: The greatest lap ever... - Anonymous - 09-09-2003

Mark in respect to your posting on the greatest lap the word IF is self explanatory. Philip must have been using 100% of the road taking a chance and it failed him.

How about Joey at Skerries in his last race when he was passed in the early stages and went on to shatter the lap record.

Big D.

Stanley Woods - last lap - Senior TT - 1935.

There's a whole book to be written about that one!

Re: The greatest lap ever... - Anonymous - 09-09-2003

So when do we get to read this book then Larry?

Re: The greatest lap ever... - Anonymous - 09-09-2003

Although I'm definitely not as young as I used to be, I'm still MUCH younger than Larry ! So I'll take my pick from the fairly modern era.

Ian Lougher - last lap of the 1990 Junior 250 race, at a speed of 117.80mph. Steve Hislop revealed in his book that this was the hardest he ever rode round the TT course (which is saying something), yet still he couldn't catch Lougher on that lap. And despite the improvement in machinery, the record stood for 9 years which is testament to what a great achievement it was.

How about Joeys first lap in the 98 lightweight then...over 100 average in the bouncing rain,he broke every other guy in the race?Or Fogartys lap chasing Hizzy on the Norton, that was hairy...or maybe Hizzy on the RVF when even Fogarty let him go?

Re: The greatest lap ever... - Anonymous - 09-09-2003

Phillip wasn't the only one who got off at Quarry,I remember the back of a set of Hizzys leathers hanging up in the Manx Kush*tani shop in Douglas, they were pretty secondhand.

Re: The greatest laps ever after... - Anonymous - 10-09-2003

Re: The greatest lap ever... - Anonymous - 10-09-2003

This is great stuff, folks. The imagination is running mental videos of all this. Keep it up!
At the moment I'll go with the Lougher lap. I can still see them at a Duke Video do later that year, grinning and describing moments.

Re: The greatest lap ever... - Anonymous - 10-09-2003

I missed Joeys last race, had to go back on the friday. The F1 was an epic though.
If anyone at Duke reads this thread,"Their finest lap" would make a marvellous video and cost buttons to make, its all archived material. And thats a freebie you owe me for the idea...

Re: The greatest lap ever... - Anonymous - 10-09-2003

What about Jock Taylor's 108.29mph lap - to do that kind of time and speed way back in 1982 was simply sensational. Even today, it's still the 11th fastest sidecar lap of all time - breathtaking.

Re: The greatest lap ever... - Anonymous - 10-09-2003

Ah good--someone has mentioned one of our three-wheeled brotherhood..

Therefore, may I put forward CHRIS VINCENT on his BSA who rode his own socks off bringing home a Brit bike in a previously German-dominated race series..
His last lap was one to watch !!

Re: The greatest lap ever... - Anonymous - 10-09-2003

Bill Ivy's first 100 mph lap on a 125 had to be a bit special, and also Mark Baldwin had a great 125 lap.

Re: The greatest lap ever... - Anonymous - 10-09-2003

IT HAS TO BE GEORGE FORMBY, MILLIONS OF FANS STILL WATCH IT EACH YEAR, AND YOU CAN BET ITS BE WATCHED MORE THAN ANY OTHER RIDERS LAP.

Re: The greatest lap ever... - Anonymous - 10-09-2003

LOL, your probably right Colin never give him a thought. "Get over you'll ave me off"

Re: The greatest lap ever... - Anonymous - 10-09-2003

That video is a cult classic! Singing on Douglas bay to cover his accomodation! superb..
Greatest lap? Bob Macs first 100mph Cheers Leech

Re: The greatest lap ever... - Anonymous - 10-09-2003

Moodie's 1999 lap record looked pretty on the limit on an ageing rc 45

Re: The greatest lap ever... - Anonymous - 10-09-2003

It has to be the last lap of the Senior. Argentinian Walter Cordobo's lap of 120mph+, 10mph faster than he had ever gone before!!!
Transponder??????????

Re: The greatest lap ever... - Anonymous - 10-09-2003

My first visit to the TT, I shall never forget Lougher's. My other favourite one I didn't see but heard on the 'wireless' down under was Bob McIntyre's.
