TEAM FOUNDS MAKE SIDECAR HISTORY AT 2016 ISLE OF MAN TT RACES - Malcolm - 09-06-2016 Team Founds Racing have completed a historic racing double podium in Sidecar Race A at the 2016 Isle of Man TT Races. Pete Founds with passenger Jevan Walmsley and Alan Founds with Finnish passenger Aki Aalto finished 2nd and 3rd place in the first of two sidecar races held on Saturday 04th June. The popular brothers made modern TT history by becoming the first ever brother sidecar drivers to finish in podium positions. The popular brothers lapped at an average speed of over 112mph, reaching speeds of upto 165mph in places around the World Famous 37 ¾ mile TT Mountain circuit.
Earlier in the week, driver Alan Founds received the prestigious Mike Hailwood Scholarship Award, which is awarded to the most up-and-coming rider at the TT. The award recognises rising talent and provides support to teams in achieving their ambitions and goals at the TT. After a challenging week of practice, the Little Neston based Wirral team had posted the 5th and 6th fastest laps in qualifying and started No 7 and No 11, with teams starting at 10 second intervals. By the end of the first lap the brothers held 6th and 7th places respectively when the race was red flagged following a fatal accident involving fellow competitor and close friend of the team, Australian sidecar driver Dwight Beare. The Race was re-started over the full 113 miles, 3 lap distance and saw the brothers move up from 5th and 6th on the first lap to 3rd and 4th on the 2nd lap and finally into podium positions by the end of the race, finishing within 3 seconds of each other as they crossed the finishing line together. The race was won by TT veteran John Holden and passenger Andy Winkle, who have appeared on the podium 13 times and previously won in 2011. In only his second year at the TT as a driver, Pete Founds said “it’s a fairy tale come true, I never expected to finish on the podium, and as a family run team we always struggle to compete against the bigger well-funded teams, but I’m delighted”. Younger brother Alan, who is the current reigning 2015 British Sidecar Champion said “It’s just amazing to be on the podium in my 3rd year here, and we are still working towards a five-year plan to ultimately win a TT. To be on the podium with brother Pete is just special”. The second Sidecar race is on Friday 10th June alongside the prestigious TT Superbike Senior race.
