Is It Bye Bye Supersport 600? - Fizzy - 02-02-2017

What do people think about the loss of the 600 class in the near future? Manufacturers aren't making as many as they did and race series around the world seem to be preparing to drop them. WSB have introduced the SuperSport300 class with Kwak 300, KTM 390s and CB500...

When there is no interest from riders an teams (or new bike available) what should the TT do to replace the class. I'd be a bit upset to drop down to just Superbike, Superstock and twins. Would the 300 class be suitable for the TT? Are they really in the same league as 125 we used to see?

I thought the 300 class was replacing the Superstock 600 class in Wsbk?

Although that still doesn't solve the issue that manufacturers are moving away from the Supersport 600's.

Personally, I would like to see the 300 class at the TT, either replacing the Lightweight (twins), one of the Supersport races or preferably the electric bikes.

My hot tip is to buy supersport bikes now, store them for 20 years and bring them out for the Classic TT Supersport class. John McG will only be in his early 60s so still winning...... Dogsbody

If that happens there'll be the blather about saving costs/money and more bikes on the grid then the regulations will ease over 2-3 years and hey presto you'll need a load of money to get the last few bhp out of the motor. A good friend looked after John McPhee last year and the Moto3 costs are quite ridiculous for a single cylinder 4-poke motor / gearbox.

ive also heard of ridiculous prices for moto 3 parts

£25k+ for a gearbox ....

Yikes that's crazy. Personally I like the 600's there power and to weight ratio is fantastic and some riders seem well suited to them and there fast and accessible. It was the development off the 600's that killed off the 750class somehow the 300cc don't seem to be a step up for me.

Hi guys from a newbie contributor but old hand club racer. I would agree about the cost of wringing the last critical fraction of power from a small street motor and wonder just how long a small four stroke would last given the flat out nature of the course. Any variety would be interesting at the TT. Small bikes may be fun to ride but how about, in the future, looking at some of the new triples from triumph and yamaha with relaxed rules on chassis and a new capacity class. In a few years there may be some more interesting supercharged motors or similar if manufacturers are not beholden to 600cc markets. Maybe in many, many, many years there could be an electric bike race. . . . .

I'm not sure what the answer is and I'm not sure the 300s are right for the TT. I'd like to see more variety and I do have a soft spot for smaller bikes but it's a massice gap betweena 300cc street bike to a 1000cc superbike. With the loss of the Supersport 600s there doesn't seem to be any middle ground anymore. I'm sure people will be racing 600s for a long time to come but they'll go the way of the 400cc bikes and just end up being old machines.
