Research shows significant increase in visitors & economic contribution from TT2017 - Malcolm - 08-08-2017 Research shows significant increase in visitors and economic contribution from TT Races in 2017
The Department of Economic Development’s annual visitor survey for the TT Races has revealed a significant increase in visitors and economic contribution from the event.
This year’s event saw a 6.2% increase in visitors to over 45,000, with an estimated spend of £34.1 million, resulting in a contribution of £24.6 million to the local economy, growth of 8.9% and 9.3% respectively.
The majority of this growth was reported to have come from a younger audience with an increase of over 40% in the under 18 audience and 36% in visitors between the age of 18 and 29.
Laurence Skelly MHK, Minister for the Department of Economic Development, commented:
‘This research is a strong indicator of the TT’s continuing appeal and potential to reach new audiences from around the world. The Department is committed to maintaining the growth of the TT with the continued support of fellow Government Departments, volunteers and our fans at home. This collaboration is important not only to increase the economic contribution that the event delivers but also to ensure the safe delivery and continued success of the TT.’
The key findings of the 2017 study were:

‘It is pleasing to see the impact that the Department’s marketing campaigns are having on the visitor numbers, particularly on the age demographic as well as growth in international visitors which are both vital to the event’s long term viability. The Department’s team remains committed to supporting controlled growth in visitors but also significant increases in commercial revenue and the media profile worldwide for both the TT Races and Festival of Motorcycling.’
