It is extremely sad to record the death of local former TT, Southern 100 and Jurby sidecar passenger Dave Mahon last month.
He rode primarily in the 1990s at Jurby, the Southern 100 and the TT with a number of drivers.
Dave started alongside Higher Foxdale’s Billy Quayle in Andreas Racing Association meetings at Jurby. He also partnered Derek Moore and Daryl Blake over the next two or three seasons. He first raced the TT in 1992 with John Macaskill of the northeast of England, accompanying him again in 1993, then with another Englishman Tim Eade for two years. Alongside Yorkshire’s Greg Lambert in 1996, Dave gained his best TT results of 17th and 13th on a Shelbourne Yamaha Thundercat. The pair finished on the podium with third place at the Ulster Grand Prix the same year, in a race won by Rob Fisher and Boyd Hutchinson. This was a brief return of the chairs to the Dundrod course, Dave Molyneux and Pete Hill having won the comeback event a year earlier. Greg Lambert, Dave Molyneux and Dave Mahon 1996 S100 Dave Mahon was entered for the TT with Conrad Harrison in 1997, but no finishes were registered. He rode in the Southern 100 on numerous occasions, including with female driver Ruth Laidlow. Dave was off the scene for a long time, but made a comeback at the TT with veteran campaigner Kenny Howles in 2015. They had a 27th that year and a 22nd place finish in 2016, but failed to complete either race in his last TT appearance in 2017 with Howles. He partnered Dave Quirk at Jurby for one meeting in 2017. Dave was brought up in Station Park, Colby, but later lived in Castletown. He worked at Strix in Port Erin for a number of years in the 1990s. He did live in the Jarrow area of northeast England for a period in the mid-1990s. His elder brother Greg also passengered on a regular basis in the TT between 1988 and 2002. JOHN WATTERSON |
