Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Southern 100 Virtual Road Races Are Go ! - Updated - Malcolm - 26-06-2020 Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Southern 100 Virtual Road Races Are Go!
The 2020 Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Southern 100 Road Races were in an advanced stage of organisation, including entries being received, when the decision was made in early March to cancel the meeting, along with the Pre-TT Classic and Post TT Races due to the lack of a guarantee that sufficient medical cover would be available because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The decision was a major disappointment, not only to the race organisers, Southern 100 Racing, but also race sponsors, competitors, along with race fans from near and wide, who had already made their travel plans and reservations to attend the friendly races in July. This July, more precisely on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 6th, 7th, 8th & 9th would have seen the 65th Southern 100 taking place with the crème de la crème of the road racers, both solo and sidecar vying for the race wins, especially the coveted Solo and Sidecar Championships. How to fill the void in one of the much-anticipated road racing events in the calendar? Southern 100 Racing’s Broadcast Partner, Manx Radio has a wealth of knowledgeable road racing commentators in its ranks, one of whom has been and still is the long-serving voice of Cross-Four-Ways, Roy Moore. When not behind a microphone, Roy has for very many years organised ‘Race Nights’, which apart from being very enjoyable and entertaining with his reminisces has also raised vast amounts of money for good causes associated with all forms of motorcycle sport and other interests. His ‘Race Nights’ are unique in that they are evolved around a road racing course with six riders taking part, in each race – all shown on a large board with the aid of photographs – a bag of seven test tickles and audience participation. Plus of course Roy’s wonderful commentaries as the race progresses with the appropriate background sound effects! Roy suggested that the ‘Race Night’ Formula could be adopted to run a series of races during ‘Southern 100 Week 2020’ and a six race programme has been devised catering for 1000cc; 600cc, 650cc, the much missed 250cc class and the prestigious Solo and Sidecar Championship Races. Continuing Roy’s theme of raising funds during these virtual races, the proceeds will be handed to the Southern 100 Supporters Club, and other charities involved with road racing also benefitting. The Supporters Club assists injured riders and their families when required and when the circumstances are more serious. also provides funds for the purchase and upkeep of vital safety equipment to ensure the Colas Billown Course has all the latest equipment at its disposal and provides training for marshals and other race personnel. Our 2020 Race Sponsors have kindly agreed to allow Southern 100 Racing to add their names to the six races in appreciation of their continued support in these unprecedented times and we are incredibly grateful to them. The six races will be broadcast ‘live’ over three evenings, on Tuesday 7th; Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th July on the Southern 100 Facebook page https://tinyurl.com/s100Virtual from 8.00pm (20.00hrs)

S & S Motors & Radcliffe Butchers 250cc Race
(Wednesday) Grid - No. - Rider - Machine 1 - 28 Tom Snow 250 Falcon Honda Moto3 Another Lightweight 250 devotee and long-time friend of the Southern 100, Guildford rider Tom Snow has been a familiar face around the paddock since 2002. Last year saw him aboard the Falcon Honda Moto3 which he brought home in first and second places in the 250 class of the Supertwins races. Tom had no hesitation to ride the machine again when offered the chance the machine again and will line up in pole position on Wednesday evening. 2 - 16 Dan Sayle 250 Baz Gaz Honda Another Manxie, Dan Sayle has gained success and fame on the Billown Course, mainly as a Championship winning Sidecar Passenger with Nick Crowe, Klaus Klaffenbock and Tim Reeves, the latter two both World Sidecar Champions. However, the Sulby man is no slouch when it comes to riding solo machines particularly the 250 and 125 two-stroke variety. His final ride before hanging up his leathers was at the 2019 Southern 100, on the 250 Baz / Gaz Honda, bringing the lightweight twin home first in the 250 class of the Supertwins race. The lure of the Colas Billown Course brings him back for one final rider on the same machine in Wednesday race. 3 - 1 Ian Lougher 250 Barnes Racing Honda Ulster – Welshman Ian Lougher, currently holds the record for the most Southern 100 race wins - 32, which includes five coveted Solo Championships. Ian’s first race was at Billown was in 1983, riding a Rat Cowles 350 Yamaha he finished 10th in the Junior race. Although now officially retired from racing, the unassuming rider has been tempted to adorn his leathers once again to ride the 1000 Blackhorse Yamaha he rode to victory in the 2008 Solo Championship. Will the wily Ulster/Welshman be first to take the flag again? The fans will get a second chance recall his prowess on two-stroke machinery, as he also has a 250 Barnes Racing Honda, he last raced to victory at the Southern 100 in 2009, where he starts from Pole position. 4 - 40 Rhys Hardisty 250 Yamaha Gilwern rider Rhys Hardisty is no stranger to the 4.25-mile Colas Billown Course in recent years on a variety of machinery, modern and classic. Rhys brings his 250 Yamaha to the grid for the 250cc race, the machine he won both Lightweight classes on in the 650 races in 2018. 5 - 5 Chris Palmer 250 Mannin Collections Honda Castletown – Billown and Chris Palmer fit together like a glove. A comparative latecomer to the Billown Course, the previous British 125 Champion finished 10th in his first 125 race in 1999; a day later in his second race he improved to 5th. Since them until he hung up his leathers, he amassed 12 wins at the Southern 100, plus 10 at the Post TT and a further13 at the Pre-TT Classic races. However it didn’t take much persuasion to tempt Chris back into his race leathers on the 250 Mannin Collections Honda, he last rode to victory in the 2012 Southern, especially when told he would be lining up alongside friendly arch-rival Ian Lougher! 6 - 18 Barry Davidson 250 Honda Ulsterman Barry Davidson was a regular at the Southern 100, although now of a certain age, he concentrates on the Classic Meeting, with some good results. Barry is however making a welcome return to the one-off 250cc race and will be aboard his 250 Honda last raced in 2010 – do not under estimate the Ballymena man! Not surprisingly he has chosen to rider the same machine in the opening race of this year’s series. 4 - 11 - Mark Parrett - 1000 W / C C Ltd BMW Another long-time competitor at the Southern 100, Millhurst rider Mark Parrett has been around since 2000 enjoying his racing around the Billown Course with reasonable success during the past 20 years, with an 11th place finish in the 2019 Solo Championship on the W/C C Ltd BMW, which he will ride in this week’s 1000cc race. 5 - 44 - Rob Hodson - 1000 BMW Another popular rider with race fans, Wigan’s Rob Hodson is making a name for himself at the July races with a number of top-six placings, most importantly a podium third in the 2019 Solo Championship on a 1000 BMW, which he has chosen to bring to line start line in the 1000cc race. 6 - 65 - Michael Sweeney - 1000 BMW Skerries rider Michael Sweeney is a relative newcomer to the 4.25-mile Billown Course, but has certainly already made a lasting impression, notching up two podium places in last year’s Southern 100, along with a creditable 6th place in the prestigious Hunts Motorcycles Solo Championship race. Michael returns with his 1000 BMW to race in the opening events of this year’s series. The Hebden Bridge rider will be out in his 650 KTS Racing Kawasaki in this special race. 4 - 56 - Adam McLean - 650 Roy Hanna MSS Kawasaki Another of that talented group of riders born in Ballymoney Adam McLean has enjoyed success since he joined the fabled McAdoo Racing Team, but has also suffered the misfortune of racing injuries that have kept him away from the sport he thrives on. Adam has enjoyed the taste of victory on the Billown Course and makes a welcome return on the 650cc race on the Roy Hanna MSS Kawasaki he rode to victory in 2018 in the Ocean Motor Village Supertwins Race. 5 - 75 - Dave Moffitt - 650 Kawasaki Another well-established Manxie, Dave Moffitt is a well-recognised face in the Billown Paddock, Dave is well suited to the popular 650 class, gaining 6th and 5th places in the 2019 races. It is no surprise that the Douglas man will be astride one of the Kawasaki twins in Tuesday’s race. 6 - 182 - Xavier Denis - 650 Kawasaki A Newcomer to the Southern 100 in 2019 French Rider Xavier Denis, he certainly proved his pedigree with two top-ten places in the 600 races and a fourth and podium third place in the Supertwin.
