Where is the Stanley Woods Clock? - Evilkinevil - 25-06-2024

I'm not sure if this is the right place, or if its becoming a personal quest or not.

TT visitor for 24 years, and booked for our annual pilgrimage in 25.

Anyhow, the scoreboard on Glenclutchery Road stood for a significant amount of time and yes it was like triggers broom. Many parts were replaced as it was rotten. When the put the fence up round it the writing was on the wall (so to speak) and now its gone. Many arguments for and against.

Some parts of the scoreboard are in the Manx Museum, some are at the motor museum at Jurby, There are a couple of bits at the Victory cafe at the Bungalow and Murrays has a couple of bits at Santon.

However, where is the Stanley Woods clock that used to sit in the middle of the scoreboard?

I personally feel this was one of the more important parts of the scoreboard, and it should have been preserved.
Stanley Woods was well before my time, but history shows him as an important part of the TT and he fairly liked the craic too.
Others have had corners named after them, but there was only 1 clock with his name on it.

I asked last year at the newly opened TT Gallery at the Manx Museum, the curator did not know.
I've asked online several times in various groups including TT, over 50's TT, manx nostalgia etc.
I've even messaged Gef the Mongoose who's online satire I enjoy, but he hasn't gotten back to me.
My homestay Landlady in Onchan has asked around and has come back with nothing, and she's pretty well connected apparently.

I again asked the curators at the Manx Museum this year, and was given an email address, which I appear to have dropped when I was buying my kippers/TT tshirts etc in Douglas that day.

Sorry for the ramble, but does anyone know about the clock?

Well, currently 242 viewings of my post and nobody is none the wiser.

So I emailed the Manx Museum today, and got a prompt response

Many thanks for your email which has reached me. The story with the clock is as follows. When the scoreboard was taken down MNH was given the opportunity to take the pieces that we felt we could use. At the time we asked what was happening with the clock. As the staff at the Motorsport office did not have an immediate use for it, we offered to take it on a loan basis to keep it safe. We had it for about a year but after that the Motorsport office asked if we could return it, which we did. I’m not sure what the reason was.

If you will allow me to pass on your email address, I will try asking some contacts there what the plans are for the clock?

I have thanked the Museum for their response and asked if they can pass on my email.

Will see how it goes, but the mystery continues

I would or thought the manx museum would be the perfect place for it .
Or the new motor museum. I can't think of anywhere else on the island more fitting.

This is the Dept of Enterprise Motorsport page - there's a box for "contact", might be worth asking them.....email is probably best then you can get an info and contact name paper trail up and running...

Update from the Manx Museum today

I promised you an update on the situation with the Stanley Woods clock. I followed this up with my colleagues at the Motorsport office, who informed me that the plans they had for the clock did not come to fruition. They have very kindly offered it back to us on a permanent basis, and we have accepted it.

Our ambition is for it to go on display as part of our TT Gallery at the Manx Museum. However I cannot as yet give you a timescale on this simply because we are so busy with other commitments at the moment. I would like to hope we can get it in position for next TT, but we might have to rearrange a few things in order to accommodate it.

How good is that!

Great news, well chuffed with that outcome

Good work Evilkinevil!
Hopefully we'll get to see it again in the not too distant future.

Excellent news / work EK ... I do wonder what happens to artefacts like that if nobody asks, I've got an image of Manx Govt storage like the end of the Indiana Jones - Raiders of the Lost Clock.

Great work you guys. It is hard to believer that something so intrinsically linked to a TT superstar could be mislaid.
Stanley Woods was one of the first International stars of the TT..,....his memory and legacy should be revered by the Organisers.

RE: Where is the Stanley Woods Clock? - Evilkinevil - 02-08-2024

Thanks for the positivity guys. It really wasn't my fight, but I thought it was something that was important to the history of the TT.

I'm really glad it has been found and will be on display.

Mystery solved.
