Royal Enfield, Redditch ...Does anyone remember this? - Harry - 23-01-2006 I recently received this request for help from someone who now lives in the US. Does anyone remember the person or shop that he is refering to? Thanks in advance for your help, Harry My last item is about Royal Enfield motorcycles, Redditch. I have been trying to research something about a 3 or 4 cylinder machine that I stumbled across back in England in around 1969/70, when I was living in Northampton. It was built in the early 1900s and was owned by the Montague Museum at Beaulieu. I was restoring a 1958 AJS CSR 600cc Vertical Twin at the time and eventually was referred to the gentleman in question for special help since AJS had gone out of business and the bike was very badly damaged from a road accident. I made the acquaintance for a few years of the only man left alive who had knowledge of that motorcycle, having worked on it during his apprenticeship years with Royal Enfield. I recall him telling me that every year the Montague Museum would ship him this machine and entrust him to prepare it for the annual London to Brighton Car and Bike Run. I happened across this machine while visiting his corner shop window in the back streets of the town. The opaque painted green glass window read, '????? ????? -- Motorcycle Engineer, written in gold lettering. I think his first name was George. He must have been in his seventies back in 1969, and was the only 'Old School" Motorcycle Engineer in the town. Does anyone remember this motorcycle engineer? The Montague Museum was unable to help. |
