Pre war German rider - Sid from Brigg - 18-10-2006 Following a discussion in the pub today, the query was raised as to a pre war German rider who was fatlaly injured at Ballaugh and there is a memorial plaque on a wall opposite the Raven pub ? Can anyone enlighten me as to whom it was ? Thanks. - larryd - 18-10-2006 Karl Gall - works BMW rider (with Georg Meier & Jock West) in 1939. Killed in practice for 1939 Senior TT. First TT visit was with the factory BM in 1938 - off on open roads and spent several weeks in Nobles hospital. The 1939 accident was, I think, on his first practice lap - trying to follow Freddie Frith's Norton. He was BMW's No 1 rider at the time. - Sid from Brigg - 18-10-2006 Thanks Larry. - Hilary M - 19-10-2006 The great Freddie Frith would have been sad about that.I knew him well, and bought my first bike from his Grimsby shop in 1963 - Sid from Brigg - 19-10-2006 At one time Freddie was sponsored by Nigel Spring of Springs Jam of Brigg How many Lincolnshire riders have won a TT ?. - Helmut Ohner - 19-10-2006 Karl Gall was not German but Austrian. He was born in Vienna but in 1938 Austria was a part of Germany (what a cruel time) avaluke - ian huntly - 20-10-2006 http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.motorjournal.cz/2001/15/gall.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.motorjournal.cz/2001/15/mj15.html&h=265&w=300&sz=36&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=NqcvgdJQdae90M:&tbnh=102&tbnw=116&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dkarl%2Bgall%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DG OR - ian huntly - 20-10-2006 http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.solitude-memorial.de/03moto/03_37/37HerzDKW.JPG&imgrefurl=http://www.solitude-memorial.de/03moto/03moto25_37.htm&h=205&w=295&sz=29&hl=en&start=2&tbnid=FSD74W2Sc8PzkM:&tbnh=80&tbnw=115&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dkarl%2Bgall%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DG - Sid from Brigg - 20-10-2006 Been there Ian,Thanks This was my friends reaction to the information you all posted. Hi Sid, Many thanks for the info on Karl Gall. I think it`s the most info I`ve ever seen about him. I`d forgotten his name! In my ancient "The Story of the TT" (published by "The TT Special" in 1947 ) he is`nt even mentioned in the 1939 chapter. He does get a casual mention in an earlier chapter as the 3rd fastest rider over 2 timed test sections of the Course in 1938. I`d no idea he was No1, I always thought that he would be Meier. |
