Southern 100 going international - Anonymous - 12-12-2006

I sincerely hope you are wrong, pikey! The two kinds of racing are totally different, the mountain course an individual test of skill, needing memory, control, calculated risk-taking - the sheer thrill of being able to ride a familiar and varying road the way one should be able to ride any road, were it not for the presence of others!
Not many things in life have really frightened me, but mass start racing alongside many others, some of whom seem to undergo a frontal lobotomy as the flag drops, on a circuit with stone walls, bumps, lamp posts etc....let me just say that IMHO the Billown circuit and Oliver's Mount should be in the same category as the original Nurburgring - ex-circuits. With the extra prestige that the TT title would bring to Castletown, too many riders would become too brave, with the inevitable result. Keep the TT on the mountain circuit.

In case anyone missed Pykey's point......... - John Foster - 13-12-2006

In that case if it's true and they do get the International status, the likes
of the holiday racers will be stung in the pocket again ! That's for the ones
that willn't be doing TT/MGP or the likes.
Then I'll wait a bit longer see what else comes out the woodwork before
sending off for my licence, incase I waste my money. It's just becoming
more expense very year, it's any wonder if any newcomers can afford to do the MGP yet alone established riders.

- Tom Loughridge - 14-12-2006

What exactly are you saying Pykey, "in a couple of years"? that is 2008, that the Southern will replace the TT. I know there has been a widespread strong suspicion for some years that the 2007 Centenary will ne the last TT on the Mountain Circuit. No doubt influenced by all of the hype and spin about the great celebrations and black tie dinner and a gathering of the greats.

I know you are well connected so do you know something the rest of us don't?

Tom i know as much as you but it as only what i think, but what really are the motives in making the friendly meeting international? hang on Tom i have read in the mcn Rossi has been aproached by George to come to over with a view if he likes the roads he will be at the TT 2008?

- GriffMuss - 14-12-2006

Pykey, you've been buying your toilet paper in the newsgent again !!
tuc tuc

- larryd - 14-12-2006

I'm sorry Pykey, but the mention of MCN takes this into the world of the Brothers Grimm :!:

Anyway, IF it were a possibility that Rossi would ride at Billown, he could do it under the present National Permit.

I reckon Cargo's right - someone's getting leaned on.

By whom :?: :?:

We're not going down the road again of an International Road Racing Championship, are we??

We saw that tried several years ago - didn't work then, and is even less likely to work now . . . . . . . . . . .

:?

Let's just wish the S100 all the best in their future plans, and wait and see what develops.
The last thing any of us want is some sort of witch hunt (me especially, obviously....)

I did hear of plans for a ducking stool in Castletown harbour.....at least I think it was "ducking"! Smile

- thewitch - 15-12-2006

No, no...that was Chris Palmer in the Tin Bath Race!

- John Foster - 15-12-2006

The only recorded execution of a witch in the Isle of Man took place within a short distance of the old Mill, when in 1617 Margaret Ine Quane and her young son were burned alive at the stake near the Market Cross in Castletown. She had been caught trying to work a fertility rite to get good crops.

There is absolutely no way that the Manx Government would have signed a contract for the supply safety fencing and other trackside equipment, for delivery over 2006-07 an '08; if the TT was under serious threat.

Nor have contracted Signature Sponsorship to sign up title sponsors that will enable further investment....and growth.

- Don Simons - 15-12-2006

From Folklore of the Isle of Man, A.W.Moore, 1891

"It is supposed that in old times the usual result of the legal procedure against Witches was that they were subjected to two so-called forms of ordeal, but which were really means of putting them to death, as, if they survived the first, the second would almost certainly prove fatal, for they were said to have been thrown into the middle of the Curragh Glass, or "green bog" pool, in the valley below Greeba mountain. If they sank, their bodies were taken out of the water, carried home, waked, and received a Christian burial ; but if; to save themselves from drowning, they managed to paddle to either side, they were instantly declared guilty of the crime of which they were charged, and were consequently either burned alive as unconvicted witches. or rolled from the top of Slieau Whallian in spiked barrels"

You should be safe Helen as you can't buy reliable spiked barrels nowadays.

- thewitch - 16-12-2006

Health and safety would never allow it these days, Don. They really know how to ruin a good night out.
Anyway, the broom (brm brm) has been functioning well today, and I am now on the Island, esconsed in Gail and David's.

- PeterCourtney - 16-12-2006

- John Foster - 16-12-2006

Peter, I can see that you've had a spell on the Island!

- Tom Loughridge - 17-12-2006

Peter now David Cretney is Minister of Trade and Industry, he could a useful contact, you could step into the world of mega business and start importing kippers into Spain, mention you are an ex TT rider and you could be in business.

- PeterCourtney - 17-12-2006

Tom - nice idea, but the trouble with trying to do any business here is finding out who wants the little brown envelopes, and how much goes in them.........Just a few weeks ago the joke was "Which town in Spain has the most mayors?" The answer "Alhaurin de laTorre" (where the big gaol for Andalucia is, and there were five mayors or ex-mayors of Marbella locked up accused of corruption!
