International Journal of Motorcycle Studies - alf885 - 15-11-2007 Who they? Well, I'd never heard of them either, apologies to those who have. I came across this very interesting site recently, the November "edition" celebrates the TT Centenary with a number of wide ranging articles including a "round table discussion" featuring Paul Phillips, Neil Tuxworth and Mick Duckworth. It's well worth a look and it'll keep you busy these frosty nights. http://ijms.nova.edu/index.html alf - thewitch - 15-11-2007 Geoff Crowther held a conference during the TT, to look at the phenomenon, and that will be the source of the "round table" discussion. - PeterCourtney - 16-11-2007 If I may be permitted to submit a reasoned and comprehensive review of Geoff Crowther's article? I have rarely read such pretentious anally-retentive poncy waffle! - thewitch - 16-11-2007 Teeheeheehee! That's a good solid academic comment. Bikes are for fun, really, aren't they? - PeterCourtney - 16-11-2007 Hopefully no one will mind me piching and quoting a sample....... "Motorcycling is an explicitly expressive practice that exploits spaces such as roads for rehearsal and performance, and expression of self. The features of spaces examined in this study and the pace and style of activity may be understood as embodied through the actions of riders on their machines as well as spectators. In engagement with place, motorcyclists use ritualistic practices, physical activities and artistic production." Sheeeeesh!! rats - ian huntly - 16-11-2007 ....a bit like playing with yourself !! I switched off after a few paragraphs of this Study...What is it all about ? Its all rehash of things that have gone before, done in the modern "let's rewrite it in our own style" way. I'm glad I have my own opinion of the TT from first hand.... - MV - 16-11-2007 Whao Peter! If thats typical...... I'm with you! - alf885 - 17-11-2007 I knew you'd all enjoy it. alf - Tom Loughridge - 17-11-2007 I thought The Little Texas Ranger had spit his dummy out a fell out with the TT because he could not have it all his own way. Looks like someone has changed his nappies and promised him all the goodies. - Don Simons - 18-11-2007 In the academic game it is all about publishing. Publish or die they say. So these guys have set up their own little journal and keep pumping out publications. Sad little world which I have been guilty of being part of. The only real way to experience the TT is to be there. I read about it for 40 years but nothing can prepare you for standing beside the course. There is a word for them, it starts with wan and finishes with kers. - Tom Loughridge - 18-11-2007 PeterCourtney Wrote:Hopefully no one will mind me piching and quoting a sample....... This is surely taking the **** or at least a wind up. 'Motorcyclists use ritualistic practises, physical activities and artistic production'. That must be some pretty pure stuff thats being cut with the credit cards what are these people on? The lunatics are running the asylum. |
