Who? - Bill Snelling - 17-01-2008

One of the TT competitors who gave a resume of his racing career was 'Ancient'
I have a feeling this is the rider concerned.
His name? (if not Ancient, my apologies!) but can anyone identify this brave man wringing his T100 down Bray Hill.

Looks like it could be a production bike :?:

Was that a Peveril club badge on his helmet, Bill?

- Bill Snelling - 17-01-2008

No, a Triumph logo which should give the game away!

- larryd - 17-01-2008

John Hurlstone :?:

1956 Clubman's Senior :?: :?:

:?

Vintage Percy Tait?

- larryd - 18-01-2008

No, Barry - deffo John Hurlstone :!: :!: :!:

Big Grin

- Bill Snelling - 18-01-2008

Yes, spot on Larry. BTW
Percy Tait rode the Clubman on a BSA because, under the rules he was barred from riding he worked for. The same thing happened to John Draper the BSA-mounted European Scrambles Champion, he had to ride Triumph and Norton in the Clubman races.

OK Just thought the Triumph clue might have pointed to Percy. Don't forget I'm a lot younger than you two gents and wasn't around in those days, more's the pity

You're right, Barry, it's seriously sad to be old . . . . . . . . .

Sorry Bill - I am of course speaking for myself only :!:

RE: Who? - ancient - 15-02-2009

oh dear unmasked!! just seen this pic of me on bray 1956 clubmans.1st triumph home.this was my 1954 bike taken back to meridan by frank baker and stan truslove, lovely people.and rebuilt for 56.to the new regs.silencers, lights ,dynamo, etc.note the very small bore pipes to use with silencers.a lovely engine and gearbox 120m.p.h. on sulby.but the frame was truly frightening it would jump sideways ugh.and when i told frank i should have had a gold star.he replied how much did your racing(on the triumph)other than buying it cost?.nothing .then shut up !!.I rode a 350 manx in september only 112 m.p.h.top speed and lapped much faster with the great handling .rode a gold star in the thruxton 500 with and prepared by john tickle and it steered as well as my manx.if only.the clubmans was a great chance to race at the TT and meet fine riders.the clubmans TT book is great, shame it couldnt have been in time to catch some of those no longer with us.still have 2 triumphs,
