The Old Dunlop Clock Tower - ian huntly - 02-05-2008 Can anyone out there help, please ?????? Ref: The Dunlop Clock Tower on the Scoreboard side of Glencrutchery Road. When was it erected ? Any press release of its first use ? When was it pulled down ? Why was it pulled down ? Was it always DUNLOP sponsored ? Would it be a reasonable cost to put a new one up ? It was a major part of the TT in those days gone by and it would be great to have one there again. Now that would have been an idea for the centenary ! And finally, when was the Bungalow Hotel at the Bungalow pulled down ? I would appreciate some help in this matter. RE: The Old Dunlop Clock Tower - GREEBA#94 - 02-05-2008 Ian, according to Wikapedia the Bungalow Hotel was pulled down in 1958 and just a small hut was built to replace the station. As a youngster in the 70's i remember using the Dunlop clock as a guide during practise sessions as to when the rider we sponsored was due. What innocent memories, would love to turn the clock back,(no pun intended). RE: The Old Dunlop Clock Tower - thewitch - 02-05-2008 There seems to be a smart new colourful clock on the board now... don't know if it was there last year... if it was I didn't notice. Anyway, I did notice a couple of weeks ago, and someone said the old one was vandalised... had a rock out through it, I think. RE: The Old Dunlop Clock Tower - ian huntly - 02-05-2008 Well, Helen, The demise of the Bungalow Hotel must be added to our EMP TT Practice commemoration...50 years since it was pulled down !! RE: The Old Dunlop Clock Tower - Bill Snelling - 02-05-2008 The current clock on the scoreboard commemorates 10-times TT winner Stanley Woods. This is just one of the TT course memorials which feature in a book due soon from Paul Copparelli and Peter Mylchreest. Full details later RE: The Old Dunlop Clock Tower - ian huntly - 02-05-2008 Dear Bill, I would not have them replacing Stanleys Clock, but that Dunlop tower was a part of the TT for many years and looked a simple structure of scaffolding which could be put back, surely. So many pictures of it yet todays scoreboard is so simple. Bring back the tower,,,,,please ! |
