Guy Martin asked for number 1 and John McGuinness asked for number 3. As second and first fastest riders ever going into the event, the race organisers had no reason not to give each rider the number they requested. RE: start numbers - PeterCourtney - 12-06-2008 What was wrong with the old system, where the top 20 'seeds' went into a hat for start number? If this was done for every race, it would even out the advantages/disadvantages for each rider. Personally, I would have hated to be number one, knowing everyone was going to scream along trying to get me in sight, thus being ahead! Of course it would mean that the programme compilers would have the immense difficulty of checking that they had put the right number against the right competitor for each race...... RE: start numbers - smokey125 - 12-06-2008 I know this was always the talked about method but when was this ever actually done? Joey was always number 3 so it throws that argument out for most of the last 30 years! Personally I like not knowing what my number will be until we get there. Preference is 14 as I should start on my own and won't normally have anybody catching me but ultimately it makes no difference to my race. I think it does you good starting from different places makes you think about your riding more. RE: start numbers - beepee - 12-06-2008 Er,doesn't everyone start on their own ? Rusty RE: start numbers - smokey125 - 13-06-2008 beepee Wrote:Er,doesn't everyone start on their own ?Sorry I should have made it clear that I was referring to the Manx when I was talking about my start number. However the idea that the top 20 seeded rides start position was/is drawn out of the hat applied to both events. As far as I’m aware. RE: start numbers - PeterCourtney - 13-06-2008 Back in TGOD all races at the TT were "in pairs, at ten-second intervals" - except for TT production races which were Le Mans start, scampering across the Glenclutchery Road, a great sight and sound! Were some (50 and 125) from the 60's not mass starts from a conventional grid? RE: start numbers - PeterCourtney - 13-06-2008 Think that was before TGOD - after that came IAWD!
