IF YOU ARE IN CORNWALL IN SEPTEMBER - Rocket Man - 24-08-2008 Well it's nearly here. Who would believe it was nearly 12 months ago since the record breaking entry of approximatly 1200 bikes took part in a countywide ride in memory of Martin Jennings who tragically died when competeing in the 1987 Isle of Man Manx Grand Prix, and raised over £4000 for the Childrens Hospice Southwest "Precious Lives Appeal". This year charity will be the "Front Line Emergency Equipment Trust". The money raised will help purchase motorcycles for the "CORNISH" paramedics who work out of the ambulance stations around the county. I believe this service is essential, especially during the summer months, just like the air ambulance, when in the event of an RTA (road traffic accident) or indeed any other emergency call out, would be able to cut through the traffic to get to the casualty and help stabilise the patient until the main ambulance arrives on scene, which could be several life threatening minutes later. Earlier this week i was considering pulling the plug on this years run due to not being able to find a suitable venue for the lunch stop. I then went on Radio Cornwall to put out a plea for suitable venues, which i am happy to say that i had 2 cast iron replies. All the arrangments have been made for the start. A tea wagon will be on site, along wih Fonzie who will provide musical entertainment. The Police will escort us as in previous years, and assist at junctions etc to keep the run moving and together. The parmediocs for whom we are raising funds for will also ride with us. All i have to do now is to sort out the route, which is kept secret for safety reasons, and arrange a "rock band" for the finish which will also have catering vans on site. All we can hope for now is a dry day, when we can get the run underway first time. If not it will go on the following Sunday, providing weather conditions permit and so on until it can be take place without clashing with another biking event in the county. I consider it to be dangerous and foolish to stage the run in wet conditions with huge amounts of bikes, and that we would not have the turnout and the charity would suffer greatly. So we all have to be patient and pray for a dry sunday. I remember back in 1989/90 we postponed twice before we got underway on the 3th attempt, and we were nearly in October. The decision will be made on the Friday morning before the Sunday after looking at the weather forecast. Stay tuned to local radio, especially the David White Show 9.00 - 12.00 on Radio Cornwall. I am sincerely grateful to the "First and Last MCC" and other indeviduals especially Mark Godfrey from Indian Queens, who has been "Mr Reliable Tail End Charlie" who has been there for God knows how many years, for their valuable assistance in the marshaling duties for without them this run could not take place. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4heBrNXLZDs RE: IF YOU ARE IN CORNWALL IN SEPTEMBER - thewitch - 24-08-2008 Well done to keep it going RE: IF YOU ARE IN CORNWALL IN SEPTEMBER - Rocket Man - 15-09-2008 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5b5Cbo2yPCM&NR=1 IMPRESSIVE OR WHAT!!! |
