Ivan Lintin (12) leads John McGuinness (4) at the start of the Gold Cup race at Scarborough
Lincolnshire’s Ivan Lintin destroyed the Scarborough Gold Cup field to lift the prestigious silverware for the first time at Oliver’s Mount on Sunday.
The Taylor Lindsey Honda rider had been in irresistible form all weekend and stepped up to the mark in the feature race, which he won by a commanding 10.26 seconds from John McGuinness on the Padgetts Honda.
Northern Ireland’s Lee Johnston completed the rostrum positions on the Pirtek Honda, a further four seconds behind, with Bruce Anstey (Padgetts Honda), James Cowton (Honda) and Mick Goodings (Kawasaki) the top six.
The was initially red-flagged due to a crash involving Daley Mathison, who escaped serious injury. However, on Saturday, Ballymoney’s Seamus Elliott was not so lucky when he came off Robbie Silvester’s Fireblade and sustained a suspected broken leg, broken ribs and a dislocated shoulder.
Lintin took the lead of the Gold Cup race from the off and never looked back as he stretched away from McGuinness lap by lap, extended his lead all the time.
Anstey had held third place until the midway point, when Johnston moved into the final rostrum place, but the Fermanagh man was unable to do anything to close the gap to Lintin and McGuinness.
It was a straightforward victory for Lintin in the end, who capitalised on the absence of Tyco Suzuki’s Guy Martin and Bradford rider Dean Harrison to steal the show.
Martin missed out as he tested the R2CL Suzuki in Germany ahead of this weekend’s Le Mans 24-Hour race, while Harrison is still injured after his crash in the Supersport race at the Ulster Grand Prix.
Lintin won yesterday’s second leg of the Superbike Final by 10 seconds from Johnston, who led briefly at the start, with Mathison finishing third.
But his victory streak was halted by Johnston in the second leg of the David Jefferies Trophy, who managed to grind out a hard-earned win by only 0.350 seconds over Lintin with Mathison taking third from Anstey by half a second.
Lintin, though, captured a hat-trick as he overhauled Cowton and Hamilton to take the spoils in leg two of the Lee Pullan Trophy Supertwin race.
He also bagged a treble on Saturday, taking victory in the first leg of the David Jefferies Trophy from Johnston and Daley Mathison and beating Jamie Hamilton and James Cowton in the opening leg of the Lee Pullan Supertwins race.
He won the first leg of the Superbike Final from Mathison and McGuinness after Johnston retired and ended a memorable weekend with six victories under his belt.
Ballyclare’s Jamie Hamilton won Saturday’s Classic Superbike race from old boss Ryan Farquhar, but yesterday Farquhar came out on top from Davy Morgan by 12 seconds after Hamilton crashed at Farm Bends.
