The new 60th Anniversary Grandstand for the Southern 100 International Road Races was officially opened on Saturday 4th July by Club Chairman, Phil Taubman in front of invited guests who had donated money towards the cost of the 171 seater Grandstand, or had contributed services to ensure the Grandstand was on the Island in readiness for the 2015 Southern 100 Road Races.

After cutting the ceremonial yellow & black ribbon, Phil handed over to Club President, Derek Nicholson to explain to those present the theory behind the new Grandstand, saying: ‘Since the Southern 100 started in 1955, the organisers have always strove to improve the facilities for those coming to watch the races.

‘ The present Grandstand at the Start-Finish area is very much open to the elements - this new covered Structure will provide protection from the vagaries of the Manx weather and the extra height will enhance the fans and enthusiasts who wish to take advantage of the facility added viewing of the races.’

Just prior to Derek Nicholson invited to those present to enjoy some light refreshments in the Club Headquarters, the Presented was shocked into silence as Club Chairman informed everyone, that the New Grandstand was to be named ‘The Nicholson Diamond Jubilee Stand’.

Interviewed minutes afterwards by Manx Radio’s James Davis, Derek said it was a complete surprise and he was very honoured by his fellow Club Members.

The new Grandstand is situated in the holding area for its debut year and will from next year be based at the Start - Finish Area opposite the Race Control on the By-Pass.
