Speeds were high at the opening practice session for the Steam Packet Southern 100 last night.

The defending champions topped the leaderboards.

Dean Harrison was quickest on the Superbikes at 111.858mph ahead of Ivan Lintin and Rob Hodson.

Newcomer Davy Todd was an impressive 8th at 106.379mph.

John Holden and Lee Cain lead the sidecar times at 99.244mph.

Second were Tim Reeves and Mark Wilkes with newcomers Lewis Blackstock and Patrick Rosney in a stunning third place.

Other class leaders are Ivan Lintin  in the Supertwins at 104.223mph,  Adrian Kershaw in the 125/400/Moto3 class at 94.013mph and Dean Harrison in the Supersport at 108.081mph.

An incident during the opening practice session of the 2018 Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Southern 100 International Road Races which resulted in the 600cc Second Session being red-flagged saw the rider being taken to Nobles Hospital by helicopter.

After which the rider, Tom Robinson was airlifted to a Hospital in the UK for further treatment, where he remains in a critical condition.

Practice followed by first three races

The first racing at the 2018 Steam Packet Southern 100 International Road Races takes place this evening.

Roads around the Billown Circuit close at 6pm and will reopen no later than 9.40pm.

There is a further practice session first followed by three races.

It starts at 7.40pm with the 600/1000cc race which is followed by a consolation event for those who didn't qualify.

The final action will be the 125/400cc/Moto3 race.

In last night's practice, Dean Harrison is quickest on the 1000cc bikes with a lap of 111.858mph followed by Ivan Lintin at 110.611mph and Rob Hodson at 110.337mph.

And in the 125/400cc/Moto3 class was led by Adrian Kershaw at 94.013mph with Paul Gartland second quickest at 93.685mph and Mick Goodings third at 92.938mph.

A sudden spell of showery rain led to a delayed start to racing at the Steam Packet Southern 100 races.

But the large crowds were rewarded for their patience with the 6th closest finish ever seen at Billown in the third & final race yesterday evening (Tues)

The first race was delayed after several riders decided conditions were not right for the Superbike machinery on slick tyres.

Organisers decided to allow competitors the chance to change tyre choices before a restart.

All races were reduced to 5 laps but Solo Champion Dean Harrison did not reappear.

When the action did get underway, Rob Hodson took victory with a last lap move in the Corlett’s Trophies 600/1000cc race to finish ahead of impressive again newcomer Davy Todd and Manxman Michael Evans.

The consolation race was a very tight affair with Paul Gartland just holding off the challenge of Barry Furbur on the finish line.

But the real drama was still to come in the final race - the Station Garage 125/400cc contest.

In an absolute thriller, Adrian Kershaw just finished as winner ahead of Mick Goodings in one of the closest finishes ever seen at the Billown Circuit.

There are  four more races at the Southern 100 this evening with roads closing at 6pm.

An oil spill on the Billown circuit last night has led to organisers re-arranging today's racing at the Southern 100.

Roads will now close at 9.45 ahead of the first race, Race 7 the 600 A Race and B Race.

It will be followed by Race 8 the 1100 Race, then Race 6 the Sidecar Race.

In the afternoon, events will get underway with Race 7C . . the 600 C Race, then Race 9 the 250/650 Race.

Race 10 is the 125/400 Moto3 Race, Race 11 the Solo Championship, then race 12 the Sidecar Championship.

The last two races of the day will be Race 14, the 600 Challenge and Race A - the Senior Support.

Solo champion continues to dominate

Dean Harrison continues to dominate the Southern 100.

The defending solo champion picked up his third and fourth wins of the meeting this morning, as he took the chequered flags in the 600cc race and the Senior 1100cc race.

James Cowton was second and Adam McLean third in the 600cc, while Ivan Lintin was second and Cowton third in the 1100cc.

This morning's restarted sidecar race (run over four laps) was won by Tim Reeves and Mark Wilkes.

John Holden and Lee Cain had crashed, which led to the first running of the race being red-flagged.

The pair were okay, but didn't line up for the restart.

There's been some fast and furious action at the Southern 100 this afternoon.

Dean Harrison won the Solo Championship Race for the second year in a row, ahead of Ivan Lintin (second) and newcomer Davey Todd (third).

In the Sidecar Championship Race, John Holden and Lee Cain twice set a new lap record, ultimately raising it to 101.286mph.

But Tim Reeves and Mark Wilkes were the ones celebrating at the end, as they took their second race win of the day by a comfortable margin.

Holden and Cain were second, with Peter Founds and Jevan Walmsley third.

Earlier in the afternoon, the six-lap 250/650cc race was won by Adam McLean, his first Southern 100 victory.

James Cowton was second, while Joey Thompson came third, setting a new class lap record of 104.97mph on his final lap.

In the 125/400 race, Adrian Kershaw beat Mick Goodings by just 0.031 seconds, with Manxman Dan Sayle finishing third.

Red flag in 600cc Challenge event

Racing in the Southern 100 was abandoned on Thursday afternoon after a red flag incident.

No information has yet been revealed about the incident, which occurred in one of the final races of the meeting.

The Hunts Motorcycles 600cc Challenge Race was the 14th event in this year's Southern 100 programme.

Earlier in the day, Dean Harrison was crowned the 2018 Solo Champion.

Adam McLean and Adrian Kershaw were also winners on the last day of racing action; with Tim Reeves and Mark Wilkes victorious in the sidecars.
