Lee Johnston bags Supersport four-timer at Barry Sheene Classic meeting at Oliver's Mount

Northern Ireland’s Lee Johnston was a class apart as the Ashcourt Racing rider won all four races in the Supersport class at the Barry Sheene Classic meeting at Oliver’s Mount, Scarborough.

Johnston, who earned his maiden Isle of Man TT victory in the first Supersport race in 2019, reigned in Saturday’s 600cc opener on his Yamaha R6 by 1.5 seconds over Dominic Herberston.

The British Supersport rider, who won the prestigious Gold Cup race at Scarborough for the first time last September, was declared the winner of race two from Herbertson after the red flags came out.

On Sunday, Johnston picked up where he left off, wrapping up another double on a day of mixed conditions at the 2.43-mile Oliver’s Mount course.

The 31-year-old came home ahead of Herbertson and Tom Weeden to seal a treble. Early leader Mike Norbury was a retirement.

Johnston completed his four-timer with another win over Norbury.

In the feature Barry Sheene Trophy race, Senior TT winner Dean Harrison retained the silverware as he dominated the race on his classic Kawasaki Superbike to win from Dave Bell.

Harrison won Saturday’s two Classic Superbike races by 21 and 23 seconds respectively and also triumphed in Sunday’s two races to make it a perfect five wins.

Guy Martin, making his first road racing appearance since the Skerries 100 last summer, was in action on his 750cc Suzuki and 750cc BSA triple machines at the event.

In the Supertwin class, Yorkshireman Jamie Coward won Saturday’s first race on his KTS Kawasaki but finished third in race two, which was won by veteran Welsh rider Ian Lougher on the ILR/Mark Coverdale Paton from Dominic Herbertson.

Coward wrapped up a hat-trick on Sunday with a double in the class, beating newcomer James Hind and Herbertson in race one, with Herbertson turning the tables on Hind to claim second place in race two.

Hind, who marked himself out as a rider to watch with an excellent runner-up finish behind Bruce Anstey in the Lightweight race at last year’s Classic TT, won all four combined Classic A/B and GP350 races on his TZ Yamaha as he made an impressive debut at Oliver’s Mount.

The event is the first road race of the depleted 2020 season, with the Gold Cup meeting also set to go ahead from September 11-13 on the same weekend as the Cookstown 100 in Co Tyrone.
