Merseyside Police issue advice to race-goers arriving in Liverpool ahead of the TT
Merseyside Police issue advice to race-goers arriving in Liverpool ahead of the Isle of Man TT Race
We are teaming up with local hotels and the Isle of Man TT Race to raise awareness around motorbike thefts on the lead-up to the festival, which starts next weekend.
Race-goers travel from across Europe to attend the event, many of whom travel on high-powered motorbikes, and via the ferry from Liverpool to the Isle of Man.
Last year, there were a total of 22 reports of motorbikes being taken whilst parked outside hotels in Liverpool City Centre in the lead-up to the event. This year, we are running a dedicated operation to carry out high-visibility policing of key locations, and delivering crime prevention advice through hotels and to race-goers in the city. We are also sharing the following top tips on motorbike security:
Protect yourself and your bike:
- Use a good quality lock, or two, and always park in conspicuous and well-lit areas
- If riding in a group, lock your bikes together overnight
- Don’t park in the same place every night – vary your parking location
- Consider fitting a forensic marking system
Lock out for other bikers:
- If you see someone trying to steal a bike, don’t try and stop them, call 999.
- If you see damage to a bike or any suspicious activity, call 1010
- If you know anything about motorcycle crime, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Sergeant Dave Yorke from Matrix Roads Policing said:
"This operation is designed to raise awareness and reassure race-goers that we are deploying resources in the right places to ensure that would-be thieves are disrupted ahead of what promises to be a great TT event. Officers will be on the ground, and local businesses and hotels are working alongside us to ensure that CCTV coverage is in place and their staff are well aware of the issue.
"Working together, we can ensure that bikes are kept safe and secure in Liverpool, and I can assure people that we will rigorously pursue anyone who attempts to steal any vehicles at this or any time. We understand the distress and inconvenience that vehicle crime has, especially to people who have travelled vast distances, and we will do everything in our power to eradicate such incidents. Spread the word, and ensure your bike is kept as secure as possible."
Anyone with information on bike theft is asked to speak to officers, message @MerPolCC, call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
