Seamus Elliott from Ballymoney who was seriously hurt in a crash at the Faugheen 50 road races.

The father of Ulster road racer Seamus Elliott is praying his son will pull through after he was seriously injured in a crash at the Faugheen 50 meeting in Co Tipperary on Sunday.

The 30-year-old Ballymoney man came off on the first lap of the Open Superbike race in Carrick-on-Suir and struck a tree.

He was airlifted to Cork University Hospital by helicopter, where he is being treated for head injuries.

On Sunday night, his father Danny told the News Letter he witnessed the incident and was the first person to arrive by his son’s side moments after the crash.

“The doctor told us the next 24 hours would be crucial.

“Seamus has bleeding on the brain, a neck fracture, a broken hip, two broken knees, broken ribs and a possible punctured lung, but it’s the head injuries that are causing the most concern.

“He was airlifted by helicopter to hospital in Cork and when we arrived there the doctor told us the news wasn’t good.

“The whole family drove down and are here now so we’re just keeping our fingers crossed,”
he added.

“He crashed not far from the start-line and I saw everything that happened. “He was motionless when I got to him and he was having problems breathing.

“I said, ‘son are you all right?’ But there was no response at all.

“He made a good start but then it seemed as though he touched with another rider going into the corner and he went into a tree,”
Mr Elliott said.

“I was only a few hundred yards away so I ran as fast as I could towards him. Unfortunately it’s one of those things and it’s just a case of wait and see for a couple of days to see if he pulls through.

“The medical team were there in seconds and they were really brilliant. Everyone here at the hospital has been brilliant with us as well and we’re just hoping it will turn out for the best.

“It’s just such a pity and Seamus was really looking forward to his home race at Armoy - he couldn’t wait for it.”

A frontrunner at the Irish National road races, Elliott claimed a major win last year at the Southern 100 on the Isle of Man in the 600cc Supersport class.

He impressed again at the same event earlier this month, finishing in fourth place in the Senior race and sixth in the headline Solo Championship race at the Billown course, which was won by Michael Dunlop.

A serious crash also occurred at the Faugheen 50 meeting during practice on Saturday, involving Brian Coomey from Cork and Noel Carroll from Co Laois.

Coomey was also flown to Cork University Hospital and is being treated in intensive care, although Carroll’s injuries are understood to be less serious.

Yes, here's hoping for a speedy recovery. Had a great talk with him at last years S100, he was truly buzzing after his win.
We didn't know who he was at first, we had to drag it out of him! As is the way with the road racers, he was a really genuine guy.

Tuesday 26th Update

Seamus Elliott remains in induced coma but ‘condition improves’

Seamus Elliott (centre) celebrates winning the 600cc race during last year's Southern 100
with runner-up Russ Mountford (left) and Dan Kneen.

Ulster road racer Seamus Elliott remains in an induced coma in intensive care at Cork University Hospital following a crash during the Faugheen 50 road races in Co Tipperary on Sunday.

The 30-year-old from Ballymoney sustained head injuries and multiple fractures in the accident, which occurred shortly after the start of the Open Superbike race.

However, Elliott’s condition has improved and his father Danny told the News Letter on Monday he was hopeful Seamus would be brought out of his induced coma on Tuesday evening.

“He has several fractures in his back and they had to operate on his femur and his hip during the night, plus his knees. He had a few small operations throughout the night but the news is better today and they are happier with him,” said Mr Elliott.

“His lung is what they called ‘scraped’ and for that reason they plan to keep him in a coma for another 24 hours to try and let his lung heal, as they don’t want it to collapse when they attempt to bring him around.

“Seamus has been in an induced coma from when they treated him at the side of the road. He has a bleed on the brain on the right-hand side and they are keeping an eye on it, but they seem to be content that it will right itself.”

Mr Elliott revealed that doctors were also concerned about his son’s spine and says he faces a long rehabilitation process after sustaining a series of broken bones.

“They had been worried about his spine and they assessed him after lunchtime today to see if he was fit enough to go for some more X-rays. Thankfully, his spine is OK, but he has several fractures in his back,”
he said.

“He has a lot of broken bones and it’s going to be a long rehabilitation for him, but they are much more pleased with him today compared to what they said when he arrived on Sunday. He’s fairly stable now so in terms of the news we had yesterday, we’re a lot happier with things now.”

Elliott claimed a major win last year at the Southern 100 on the Isle of Man in the 600cc Supersport class.

He impressed again at the same event earlier this month, finishing fourth in the Senior race and sixth in the headline Solo race.

A serious crash also occurred at Faugheen during practice on Saturday, involving Brian Coomey from Cork and Noel Carroll from Co Laois.

Coomey was also flown to Cork University Hospital and is being treated in intensive care. Carroll’s injuries are less serious.

These guys are true and proper heroes. Hopefully the small and little improvements will change course and change into greater improvements back to full strength. Best wishes and a speedy recovery.

Seamus Elliott 'making good progress' in hospital after Faugheen crash

Ballymoney’s Seamus Elliott has made ‘miraculous’ progress following a serious accident at the Faugheen 50 road races in Co Tipperary last Sunday.

The 30-year-old sustained head injuries and multiple fractures in the crash, which occurred at high speed shortly after the start of the Open Superbike race.

Elliott was airlifted from the scene to Cork University Hospital by the Irish Coastguard and in an interview with the News Letter hours after the incident, his father Danny said doctors had warned him of the severity of his injuries, which included bleeding on the right side of the brain.

He was placed in an induced coma but is now awake and talking having made excellent progress over the past seven days.

At the Armoy road races on Saturday, Aaron Boyd – who has supplied Seamus with a 400cc Yamaha this season – provided the latest update on his condition and said his recovery has been nothing short of remarkable.

“I was speaking to Seamus yesterday afternoon [Friday] and he apologised as he wouldn’t be at Armoy because he rides one of our 400s,” he said.

“It’s a miracle how far he has come in a few days because he was very badly injured. He is sitting up talking and I would say you might see Seamus back on a bike in the future.

“It affects you when something like that happens because we know Seamus well and it has affected me today – my mind wasn’t even on my own race because when something like this happens, it hits you hard and makes you think,”
he added.

“But thankfully Seamus has been doing really well because it wasn’t good initially and he’s come on leaps and bounds, which is great news for everyone.”

A frontrunner at the Irish National road races, Elliott claimed a major win last year at the Southern 100 on the Isle of Man in the 600cc Supersport class.

He impressed again at the same event earlier this month, finishing in fourth place in the Senior race and sixth in the headline Solo Championship race at the Billown course.
