FOR the first time since they started their Douglas business almost 40 years ago, Des and Wyn Evans will be able to go on holiday for at least a fortnight.
The couple, of Des Evans Motors, in West View Lane, have sold their premises and will be closing the door for the last time on September 30.

They have big plans for their retirement – after a couple of holidays, one to Paris and then to see family in the UK, they hope to travel round Europe taking part in classic motorcycle parades with their Vincent Grey Flash.

It will be the first time they have been able to take part in parades further afield than England because they were unable to close their shop for more than a week at a time.

Des Evans Motors opened in 1970, three months after they got married.

It is one of the oldest garages in the Island, originally selling petrol. It has been a supplier of Honda Power Products since 1972 and carried out repair work on the emergency services' vehicles.

Wyn said: 'It feels great. We decided the time was right and we are both over retirement age.'

Des added: 'It is the end of an era. We will miss the customers – we had a lot of good customers for many years.

'We've enjoyed it. We never came into work and said we didn't want to be there.'

Des, 72, and Wyn, 65, are both big motorcycle fans and they met when Des came over in the 1960s to race in the TT.

Des raced in the MGP and TT in the 1960s and was a travelling marshal for 32 years. He is now the deputy chief competitors controller and start line and stop box judge for the MGP.

Wyn is a trustee of the Autocycling Union and the competitors welfare officer for the MGP, TT and the Southern Hundred.

Good luck to both of them- they deserve it. Met Wynn at the Manx the year our good friend Geoff Sawyer lost his life, she does a fantastic job under mostly very difficult circumstances.

Thank you for all your hard work.
Life's too short- live it to the max and enjoy yourselves
