James Westmoreland kicked off raceday for the JG Speedfit round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship on the top of the times, pushing ahead of pole-sitter Josh Brookes to claim the top spot ahead of the opening race at Thruxton.

The pack continued to be incredibly close with the top 15 riders covered by just 0.930s and initially Luke Mossey held the leading position in the opening minutes of the session. The Quattro Plant Kawasaki rider had his spell at the top ended as Westmoreland moved ahead, but Brookes was also on the up and he moved to the top of the pile for Milwaukee Yamaha.

Westmoreland though was showing strong pace in the 15-minute session and he moved back ahead in the final five minutes to hold the top spot from Brookes and Mossey. Meanwhile Shane 'Shakey' Byrne held the fourth fastest position as the PBM Kawasaki team had their final chance to make improvements before the race, where the defending champion starts from the sixth row for race one.

Howie Mainwaring was fifth fastest from Martin Jessopp as they moved up the order in the closing stages, pushing Richard Cooper to seventh ahead of his Anvil Hire TAG Kawasaki team-mate Filip Backlund. Tommy Bridewell broke into the top ten for the first time this weekend for Tyco BMW with Dan Linfoot completing the top ten contenders with John Hopkins in 14th position for the Lloyds British Moto Rapido Ducati team.
