Bushys Tent in 2014

A new attraction for TT revellers will mark this year’s 20th appearance of the traditional Bushy’s beer tent on Douglas seafront.

The zip wire will start from the top of a 50-foot scaffolding tower and run the length of the tent enclosure in the direction of the sea terminal where passengers will disembark.

Bushy’s boss Martin Brunnschweiler said:

’It will start near the pumping station and end at a lower tower where they hit the brakes and people can dismount.

’I’ve seen these things before at music festivals and thought it would be a wonderful idea for the TT.’

Mr Brunnschweiler said he had already discussed the matter with the relevant authorities and it seemed to ’tick all the boxes’.

In addition, he said the provider was very experienced at running the attraction and setting it up safely.

No precise details of the fee to go on the attraction have yet been given, but it’s expected to be around the £20 mark.

’As it is the 20th year of the Bushy’s beer tent, we are always looking for things to keep it fresh, and we hope to have a few other things going on too to mark the anniversary,’
Mr Brunnschweiler said.

The original Bushy’s bar at the bottom of Victoria Street was a TT landmark and an essential destination on the itinerary of many TT visitors for many years.

Housing three bars, it was famed for its quirky interior, including a red telephone box and a Ford Anglia juke box. It was also the location for a multitude of live music performances and stand-up comedy.

The bar shut in 1998 when the lease on the building expired. But the area remained a focal point for TT visitors and in response to that, the Bushy’s beer tent was born. It has now become part of the TT landscape with a vast bar and live music.
