He was certainly a unique character and made an impression on me when I was younger. (Not by a tall chimney falling on me, I hasten to add)

what a great bloke he was. i was watching the repeats again the other night, about his life "the fred dibnah story" brilliant. that man had no fear, i got frightened watching him. r.i.p. fred, another great character lost.

A mechanical genious of the old school, and a fascinating humerous character with great courage never missed one of his programmes.

his shows were brilliant. very few people can convey their excitement about things the way he could.

Or explain so clearly how things worked. He made engineering interesting for people who would normally have been scared off by complexity. I will miss his lovely manner and his fascinating programmes.
I wonder if he bumped into Geoff Hamilton up there yet...they would get on really well...

Watching him climbing up the ladder of one of those chimneys and standing on the top frightened me more than anything I've ever seen or done on a motorbike.
