Mark Cavendish was crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year earlier tonight.

The cycling star saw off competition from Open champion Darren Clarke, who finished second, and Mo Farrah who claimed third spot.

Cavendish became the first Briton to win the Tour de France's Green Jersey, for the top sprinter, with five stage victories.

He later eclipsed that achievement by winning the Rainbow Jersey in Copenhagen - the first Briton to do so since 1965.
