The North West 200 is set to benefit from a major association with Vauxhall.

The British car giant became involved with the famous international road race on the Causeway Coast this year, sponsoring the hugely successful inaugural Supertwin event, which was dominated by Ulster star Ryan Farquhar’s KMR Kawasaki team.

Farquhar, who announced his retirement from the sport in an exclusive interview with the News Letter in August, won the NW200 Vauxhall Supertwin race from ex-Grand Prix ace Jeremy McWilliams and 13-times ‘Triangle’ winner Rutter, who completed a clean-sweep on the Dungannon man’s immaculate KMR machines.

The Supertwin event was held on the Thursday evening following final practice last year along with the first of two Superstock races as part of a schedule revamp.

It is understood the format will be retained after receiving a positive reception from fans, although a second Supertwin race could be added to Saturday’s programme, increasing the number of races on the main bill to six.

Vauxhall supported NW200 stalwart Rutter in the Supertwin race in May and provided the popular English star with the use of a £50,000 VXR8 GTS saloon throughout race week.

The automotive manufacturer also showcased a bespoke display at the start/finish area and hosted Q&A sessions with Rutter, McGuinness, former North West 200 Superbike king Steve Plater and World Superbike legend Carl Fogarty at the Vauxhall stand, which proved a hit with fans.

The renowned brand is set to significantly increase its involvement with the event in a two-year deal.

Relentless Energy Drink has been the title sponsor of the North West 200 for the past three years.

The iconic race attracts in the region of 100,000 fans every year.
