The opening practice session of the 2013 Southern 100 has been called off.

It follows an incident in the 600cc qualifying this evening (Monday).

The road between the Arbory Road junction and the by-pass to Ballkaighen remains closed.

The rest of the Billown circuit has been opened.

A rider has been killed in the first practice session of the Southern 100.

Police are currently investigating the incident which occurred on the Billown Circuit at approximately 7.15pm.

It happened on the approach to Ballakeighan Corner, more details are still unclear as investigators examine the scene.

The rider has not yet been formally identified and family members are being supported by the ACU riders welfare officer.

An appeal has gone out to any spectators who witnessed the crash to contact Port Erin Police Station on 631520.

David Jukes, 46 leaves a partner Cath and a young son Simon.

Southern 100 Racing extends its sincere condolences to families, relatives and friends at this very sad time.

The organisers are carrying out a full investigation into the circumstances of the incident; the Coroner of Inquests has been informed.

A new schedule has been drawn up for Tuesday 9th July as a result of the curtailment of practice on Monday evening.

There will be no Newcomers familiarisation laps, as all newcomers completed their laps last night.

Solo machines with Green Plates will be the first session out this evening followed by the Sidecars.

The order for the remaining solos classes will be Red Plates, Yellow Plates, Black Plates, the Sidecars and finally Green Plates.

The Practice Session will be followed by:

Race 1 - 1100/600 Solo,

then

Race 2 - Sidecars.
