MHK suggests TT demonstration cars were ‘driven by idiots’
Questions about an accident at Sulby Bridge involving a Subaru demonstration car driven by an American journalist during TT were raised in Tynwald.
John Houghton (Douglas North) suggested the cars had been racing on the closed road - a claim denied by Economic Development Minister John Shimmin.
But Mr Shimmin said serious allegations made by Mr Houghton would need to be investigated.
Mr Houghton suggested the cars had been ‘driven by idiots’. ‘These cars were being raced,’ he insisted, claiming the vehicle was travelling at 60pmh when it crashed.
The Minister said the incident on Wednesday June 5 involved one of the demonstration vehicle driven by drivers supplied by Subaru as part of their sponsorship package. ‘No cars were racing on the TT course. No cars were permitted to race on the TT course during TT2013,’ he told Tynwald.
He said the driver had car racing experience but was not familiar with the TT course. Following a review, all drivers will have to have knowledge of the course before they drive on closed roads in future.
