Jeremy McWilliams finished a lap down in 29th place in the British Grand Prix Moto2 race after being passed fit to ride following two falls in qualifying.

The Glengormley rider managed to qualify despite those two spills on Saturday and started from the 12th row of the grid as the 34th fastest rider.

McWilliams was aboard the experimental Brough Superior chassis in the race.

The 50-year-old, who came close to winning the 2000 British GP, was making his first GP appearance since 2007.

He ended ahead of Dakota Mamola after the 18-lap race, which was won by series leader Tito Rabat from Mika Kallio.

McWilliams won the 250cc Dutch GP at Assen in 2001 and was a winner of the Supertwins race at the North West 200 international road race in 2013.

He secured two podium finishes at MotoGP level, including the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in 2000.

McWilliams, who is 17 years older than any rider currently competing in Moto2, came third in England and finished in the same position in Italy earlier in the 2000 series.

Meanwhile Toomebridge rider Michael Laverty was 17th in the MotoGP race, which was won by Marc Marquez from Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi.

"I'm happy with that. I was ahead of the other guys on similar bikes so it was a good race," said Laverty.
