As a new member on here, can somebody please explain how to post photos. I have uploaded to flickr but when I go back to the Forum and click on the insert image icon, nothing happens. I am not sure where to copy the link to in my post. Many thanks.

Did it using the bucket Dommy, just copy and paste the image code straight in as usual. Can't be hard. Me myself and I did it all on my lonsome!! Who's a clever boy, do I get a cup of tea for that

Sorry to have to tell you Dommy but you have the wrong number on that bike !! Its a lot more than 110 days its actually a 189, I hope you remember to tell that Stick 's fellow that me myself and I had to show you how it was done and that I had been. Stood in the right field as I did it , lol better dash off and check that as I just put the first thing up that I had a code for lol

I deliberately tried it with a photo that I would not use in the countdown Eddy, can't use the shot twice can we.
I was wondering about a countdown on this website, but reading Malcolm's latest post, I think it will be ok, if we all stick to the size of file he states.  That's a good idea, as some of the pictures were getting too large on the "other" site anyway.

Just checked on flickr and a 640x420 is around 90kb hope thats OK. On there you just use the BB code and paste it into your reply.

And here is the same picture saved at 72dpi & at a size of approx 60kb retaining the same physical size.

A decent graphics programme to re-format pictures for upload, can save one heck of a lot of server space.

All pictures that I upload are set in my software to be at 72dpi or less (if they are sometimes supplied by others).

Is there any difference in noticeable clarity ??

Wouldn't. It be nice if we had an attachment on the site that could re size stuff as it was being posted automatically , for there are many of us out here that have trouble doing all that techno stuff but would not bothered that it had to be done for the greater good,

As an example, you can resize jpg files via an online facility which can be located via - http://www.picresize.com/

and there are many other free programmes for doing that kind of thing, on the net, as well as being inclusive within the standard software that comes with most PC's these days.

A word of warning to people new to re-sizing images: Create a new folder and save them in that, separate to the original file otherwise you run the risk of making your picture files to small to print from!  Unless for picture storing host can do that without compromising the originals.

Good call on 72dpi - it's fine for viewing on screen.  You only need the usual 300dpi if you want to make prints.

While we're on the general subject, Malcolm - can you let me know if it's acceptable for me to watermark my images with my website address?  It's opaque at approx 45%.  I do that to try and protect myself from theft.  Even so, I found some of my shots on a Czech website the other day and the guy that pinched them had even put his own copyright mark on them!

Re pic size
The reason I used that pic size was mainly for convenience flickr lets you pick different sizes and I just looked through to find something that fitted in with the sizes that Malcom advised.

I use Google/Picasa for my pics. They can b easily set to public or private. Even if a picture is in a private folder, I can still post it for every one to see with a direct link.




in the link for the above picture, there is text "....vN0/s480/IMG_8644.JPG"  I can manually change the size of the inserted picture by changing the value s480 to for example s1024, s640 and so on..

I think (only think at the mo'!) that if you insert pic, then click on it,
'grab' the corner & drag it in, it tells you what the size is, so you can adjust it accordingly.
Is that right?

Just tried that it didn't work for me.

Have been trying to get my head around PPI, DPI, Apple Pie, file size When I resize to 72 resolution with PSE  all I get is a very small pic with large pixels

I just tried resizing the original photo to 72dpi in my photo editing software, and this is the result, looks ok to me and file size is quite small. 
If I resize the picture size first, and then change the dpi to 72 I finish up with a tiny picture with huge pixels just as Rutolander.

I know it can all be done , but wouldn't it be nice if it was all done from the other end , that the receiver could not resize to its preferences automatically saving us all a headache, oh for an easy life ,

But wheres the fun in learning something new.
 Iv just tried it and it works but I still got a file size thats to big something to work on. 

This is how I do it in Photoshop Elements:

Open the shot you want to edit and click on 'image'.  From the drop down menu select 'resize' and then 'image size'.   You'll find a box that says 'resolution' which will default to 300.  Change that to 72 and then change the length to 640 if the shot is in landscape format or height if it's in portrait.

You then need to save this re-sized image to a different folder to the original.  Click 'save as' and then save it to the new folder.  When you do this you can select what level of quality this is.  You'll need to select about 5 for a sub-100k file size.  Job done.
