Chris was leading the 1981 Senior TT riding no. 13 after three laps when it was stopped for 'bad weather'. There was conjecture that pressure was applied by a works team to have the race voided. Chris retired from the re-run race.

The Toff as he was called was on for a pretty certain win that day when the race was stopped I believe at the request of a certain works rider and works team who could not stay with Chris, caused a fair bit of bad feeling at the time, especially when the offending parties went on to win the re-run. Well I suppose if you can't win in the rain lets stop the race?

I believe Chris then went on to buy one of the first Works NS500 Hondas and remortgaged his house and went into massive debt to pay for it.

I heard he crashed the bike in a big way, maybe Silverstone? and it was a total wreck he then went bankcrupt and lost his house because of it.

If true thats dedication to the sport

In the rerun,chris fell at braddan bridge,
the only damage to the bike was a broken gear lever,no damage to chris,but he was cheesed off to say the least,and was "lifted out of the way",it was the first time i got to get my hands on a rg 500,,lol

If Chris got an early RS500 he got a real turkey,and would have paid an absolute fortune for it,nearly twice as much as for an RG.A gearbox bearing would spin,wrecking the cases,never buy the first model of anything...

Good advice! seem to remember Billie Guthrie sure it was him. telling me about the first TZ500 to arrive in the U.K that he bought that wrecked gearboxes every time out. He was screaming about sueing Mitsui.

I bought one of the very first Bultaco TSS 250s what a disaster that was, remember struggling home over the mountain lying last on the roads with a gearbox full of broken teeth and I found out later a broken frame. Had travelling marshall Des evans cruising alongside me as my personal escort and finishing last but two.

To be fair to Honda,the bike became a fine machine and a firm favorite with privateers as the RG faded out.Shame about the guys who sold their souls for what they were told was a detuned NS500 though...
