Jonathan Rea dramatically crashed out of the final race of the 2020 season at Estoril in Portugal as he chased a milestone 100th World Superbike victory.

Rea, who won the title for a record sixth time in a row on Saturday, was holding third place after closing in on Chaz Davies and Toprak Razgatlioglu when he came off his Kawasaki with 13 laps to go.

The Northern Ireland rider was eager to seize his chance to end the weekend on a high with a victory after he was forced to start from 15th place on the grid in Saturday’s race and the Superpole race on Sunday, with Rea denied the chance of a higher starting position after crashing out of qualifying.

He had lined up on row two in fifth place for the final race at Estoril based on his lap time from the earlier Superpole race, but the 33-year-old will now have to wait until 2021 for the opportunity to challenge for an incredible 100th race win in World Superbikes.

Rea moved onto 99 wins at Magny-Cours in France at the penultimate round two weeks ago, where he won the first race and the Superpole race before finishing fourth in the third encounter.
