Scouts to say farewell to TT scoreboard

Cubs and explorers invited for goodbye picture

Scouts are being invited to be photographed one last time in front of the iconic TT scoreboard.

Standing for over 100 years, the board took 70 scouts to operate it, keeping Grandstand fans up to date with the riders progress.

It's being taken down.

When a consultation on its future was held last year ( 2019), Motorsport political member Rob Callister made this promise:

Cubs, scouts and explorers are invited to turn up in full uniform at 10'o clock on Saturday morning (10) at the bottom of pit lane.

Well it had to come I suppose but what a sad day indeed. Having visited the TT/MGP for over 50 years, the scoreboard and the scouts were such a big part of the festival.😕
.
....today is the tomorrow that you worried about yesterday.

RE: Scouts to say farewell to TT scoreboard
Loads of happy days history there and where I was fortunate enough to start getting close to the racing as a Cub / Scout behind the boards picking up from the painters and knocking the plates through to the front of scoreboard, then moved up to the rider positional clocks then onto the front of scoreboard for tearing off the lap sheets and hanging the painted time/speed plates then across the road and up to the old rickety "daddy long legs" control tower for calling the rider positional clock control by radio and running messages to and from the commentators etc, lovely memories especially when in those days we were allowed to sit and dangle legs over the front of scoreboard to watch the start of each race.

What a sad day it will be when it actually is pulled down the first time I went in 1962 my dad showed it to me and to me it will always be a part of the TT it should be re- erected some where else so the fans can see how it was all those years ago.

RE: Scouts to say farewell to TT scoreboard
I remember sitting in the grandstand in the early 2000's seething after listening to a young couple in front of me ranting about how rubbish the scoreboard was an why wasn't it a digital display. I held my tongue but really wanted to give them a piece of my mind about why this was so important and the it represented a soul and community (in the racing) that would be destroyed by a digital display.

For me the scoreboard spoke volumes about the history of the event and the legacy that both the racing has left on the island and the island on the racing. A throw back to when racing was less commercialised and commoditised. It shouldn't have to be the same as Donnington. Racing at the TT has (had?) an old world honesty and integrity that shouldn't need team apparel, wrap around shades and sponsors marquees - everyone there was doing it for the love of it. The TT is and will continue to be unique and the scoreboard was a totem for the uniqueness.

But as already observed - all things must pass. But for sure it'll take some of the romance out of the spectacle.

Such is life.

I'll certainly be sad to see it go.
I can foresee some mammoth video screen type affair, headed (& footed) by rolling adverts (like some footy ground hoarding), with full screen ads between races.
The timing side will, of course, be fairly automated, with the Scouts adding/changing info using a Playstation  (or similar!) type control device.
I haven't got a clue really, just my tupenn'oth on the subject.

Apparently the scoreboard is getting taken down at the end of October 2020, and some of the scoreboard is going be put into the Manx Museum.

1962 was my first year TT year too. The removal of the scoreboard has been mooted for quite a while now so I'm not entirely surprised but I am very disappointed. I wonder if they'll put recognisable bits of it up for sale? I wouldn't mind a souvenir from it.

The course map on the TT scoreboard has been removed by someone and it's an act of theft, lets hope it's returned soon as it's going to go into the Manx Museum , it's on Manxradio website/news.

Course map stolen from TT scoreboard

Police investigating theft from Glencrutchery Road structure

The TT course map has been stolen from the Island's iconic scoreboard.

The Department for Enterprise has confirmed the part featuring the map of the course has been taken from the structure on Glencrutchery Road.

Police are investigating the matter and say any further thefts from the monument will also be treated as 'criminal activity'.

It follows news last week that parts of the scoreboard are to be preserved by Manx National Heritage as the current structure has been deemed no longer fit for purpose.

Elements of the fixture are to make up part of the new TT Gallery at the Manx Museum earmarked to open in 2022.

The department is looking at new designs for a replacement, working alongside the long-time affiliated Manx Scout Assocation.

Meanwhile, the TT Motorsport team is asking that whoever has taken the course map return it to the team, Manx National Heritage or tell the police where it is.

TT scoreboard course map returned following appeal

Sign delivered back to police by 'well-intentioned individual'

The course map, stolen from the TT scoreboard yesterday, has been returned.

Following an appeal, police and the TT Motorsport team said the sign was delivered back to them by a 'well-intentioned individual'.

The man said he believed he was operating with the authority to remove the board before the planned demolition, announced last week.

His explanation was accepted.

Police say, however, the removal of any items from the scoreboard remains a criminal matter and will be treated as such.

Scouts say goodbye to TT landmark

It has updated spectators on lap times and leaders for decades but now the TT scoreboard is consigned to history.

No longer fit for purpose, the Department of Enterprise has, after public consultation, decided to replace the historic board with a modern system which its says will be a mix of ’old and new technologies in a permanent fixed solution’.

On Saturday, some of the island’s Scouts, who have helped update the scoreboard during the races, visited it for the last time before it is demolished.

The Scouts are involved in the plans for a replacement scoreboard, with the organisation keen t o rtain its unique place in the home of motorsport.

Not all of the scoreboard will be scrapped, sections of it are to be retained by Manx National Heritage as part of its planned TT exhibition at the Manx Museum.

A MNH spokesman said that ’the sections to be salvaged incorporate some of the earliest parts, possibly from as early as the 1920s’ and that it will join the exhibit which is due to open in 2022.

Matthew Richardson, curator of social history, said:

’We have been aware of plans to refurbish the scoreboard for a number of years, and liaised closely with colleagues at the Department for Enterprise to ensure that when the time eventually came, MNH was on hand to ensure the more historic pieces could be preserved.

’The traditional scoreboard, with its clocks and hand painted numbers has long been an iconic part of the TT, and we are pleased to think that even though the event moves with the times and modernises its presentation, we can ensure that these aspects of its past are not lost or forgotten.’

The proposed replacement for a new board at, present, is a fully integrated design that incorporates the necessary safety features to allow for existing operations to continue without the need for the existing separate safety fence at the front of the structure.

Consideration will be given to all of the existing operations that occur when the structure is in use, the safety of those operating the scoreboards and those persons in the timekeeper’s huts.

Ahhhh ... that's where my TT / MGP journey started with Cubs & Scouts in the 70's ... over on the boards behind then on the front doing lap tear-offs and time/speed plates or up on the clickety-clack rider position dials/levers then up in the old daddy long legs grandstand on the radios and running messages between the rooms .... really great treasured days.

RE: Scouts to say farewell to TT scoreboard
I can imagine them stringing together a line of (portable) "massive" big screen TVs , with the images of the old scoreboard on them.
All controlled electronically, but some inputs still done by them Scouts.
It'll not be the same tho'!

Edit :- Ha ha! Ive just looked at my post from almost exactly 12 months ago! Sorry!  Confused

No scoreboard at the grandstand, and no mention of a new scoreboard yet!, So not sure what is going to be put in its place.

Just an empty space at the moment, might be a temporary screen for TT 2022!,
