Conditions were ideal for start of the second days racing for the Barry Sheene Road Race Festival at Oliver’s Mount Scarborough.

The opening race of the afternoon was the second leg of the combined Syd Barnett 350cc Classic and the Red Rose 250cc Classic, held over six laps.

First leg winner and pole position holder Gary Jamison got away, but it was Pete Boast who got the hole shot into Mere Hairpin and led at the end of the lap from Kevin Strowger and Ross Johnson, with Jamison fourth.

The lead had opened to four seconds after two laps with positions remaining static.

Lap three and the lead had doubled to eight seconds, with Peter Wakefield moving into third.

Lap four and a further five seconds was added to Boast’s lead, with only five seconds between second and third.

The penultimate lap saw Pete Boast enjoy a 17.6 second lead as the gap between Strowger and Wakefield closed to 4.4 seconds. Gary Jamison moved into fourth.

At the chequered flag Pete Boast was some 21 seconds ahead of Kevin Strowger who had a six second advantage on Peter Wakefield.

The second race was another combined event, modern solos up to 400cc and the Denis Parkinson 500cc Classic which was red flagged at the end of the opening lap after an incident at the exit to Farms Bends.

The restart over five laps saw Alistair Haworth heading the pack at the end of the opening lap from James Cowton and Mark Goodings. John Fawcett headed the 500cc classic machines.

Cowton was just half a second down on Haworth at the end of the second lap, with Goodings 3.5 seconds adrift of Cowton.

Lap three and Cowton retired at Farm Bends (OK) allowing Goodings into second 8 seconds behind, with Kevin Strowger climbing to third.

Lap four, and Howarth had a nine second lead over Goodings and Strowger closing the gap to Goodings to 0.2 of a second.

At the flag it was Alistair Haworth from Mark Goodings and Kevin Strowger, whilst in the 500cc Classic it was John Fawcett, Martin Lyons and Billy Lyle.

Race Nine, for Supersport (600cc) machines over eight laps and it was Mark Goodings who gained the hole-shot into Mere Hairpin, however at the end of the first lap it was James Cowton who headed the field by 0.9 of a second from Mark Goodings and Tom Weeden.

Lap two and the gap had increased to 2.3 seconds for Cowton, whilst Goodings increased his advantage over Weeden to six seconds. Mike Minns moved into fourth.

Lap three and another second had been added to the gap between Cowton and Goodings, whilst the difference between second and third was now ten seconds.

Half distance lap, and Cowton had extended his lead to 4.9 seconds, with Weeden now 12 seconds adrift in third. David Bell climbed to fifth.

Lap five, with positions of three leaders remaining static, Ross Connolly moved into sixth place.

Three-quarters race distance and Cowton’s advantage was 14.9 seconds with Weeden now closing the gap to nine seconds. Ross Connolly moved into fifth.

Lap seven, and a massive 24 seconds lead for Cowton as the gap between Goodings and Weeden was closed to four seconds.

At the chequered flag James Cowton took the victory by 27.125 seconds. Mark Goodings finished second a mere 0.2 of a second ahead of Tom Weeden.

Race ten, the Barry Sheene Classic Superbike Race, Mick Goodings held a 0.4 of a second lead at the end of the first lap from Jules Croft with Keith Pringle third 2.5 seconds down.

Another lap and the lead was increased to 1.2 seconds, with Pringle 7 now seconds down in third.

Lap three, and positions remained the same and by half distance Goodings continued to dominate at the front increasing the lead to 3.3 seconds. Pringle was now 13 seconds down in third.

Positions remained the same at three-quarter race distance, and at the chequered flag Mick Goodings advantage was down to 2.3 seconds from Jules Croft with Keith Pringle.

The penultimate event of the programme a six lap invitation race which saw Jules Croft take the hole-shot, but it was James Cowton who headed the pack by half a second at the end of the first lap, with Mick Goodings third.

Goodings was second next time round, as Cowton increased his lead to 1.2 seconds.

Half distance and Mick Goodings was ahead by half a second of Cowton with Croft another half second down.

With four laps done the first three remained in station the gaps increasing equally to 0.7 of a second between first and second and second and third.

The penultimate lap and Goodings had increased his pace and advantage to 1.6 seconds.

Mick Goodings took the chequered flag 2.732 seconds ahead of James Cowton with Jules Croft third.

The final event of the two-day Barry Sheene Road Race Festival was the second leg of the SuperTwins Race held over six laps.

Mick Goodings was in pole position and took the hole-shot into Mere Hairpin and had the lead at then of the opening lap, followed by David Bell and Tom Weeden.

Lap two saw Goodings holding a 0.3 second lead, down by a tenth from the first lap, with Weeden still in third some five seconds behind.

Half distance and the gap remained the same between Goodings and Bell, but Weeden dropped by another two seconds.

Lap four, and the gap is reduced to 0.2 of a second, as the leading pair extend their lead over third place man Weeden by another two seconds.
Lap five, and David Bell was at the front of the field and had a 0.6 of a second advantage over Mick Goodings. Tom Weeden was third now 12 seconds adrift.

At the chequered flag, David Bell had half a second on Mick Goodings with Tom Weeden third.
