Cock o’the North Road Races – Saturday


Overcast conditions greeted riders as they prepared for practice for the day one of the 2014 Cock o’the North Continental Road Races at Oliver’s Mount, Scarborough.

The start of racing was delayed after an incident during the sidecar qualifying – a blown engine resulted in an oil-slick going into Farm Bends which took some time to clear to make the course safe to race.

Add in a couple of intermittent showers and finally the sun came out as racing got underway two hours later than scheduled.

Race One was the Senior A Final, first leg for machines up to 1300cc over six laps, down two from the original distance due to the delay.

Dean Harrison had Pole position after qualifying and got the hole-shot ahead of Daley Mathison into Mere Hairpin.

At the end of the lap it was Harrison by just under a second from Ivan Lintin and Daley Mathison some six-tenths down.

By the end of lap two the gap was up to 2 seconds as positions remained the same. James Cowton was fourth, Bruce Birnie fifth and Mick Goodings sixth.

At half distance the leadd was now up to 4.4 seconds.

Daley Mathison slipped off on the fourth lap – OK promoting James Cowton the third some 25 seconds off the leader Harrison.

Lap five and Dean had sevens on Ivan with James still third and at the chequered flag it was Dean Harrison from Ivan Lintin and James Cowton with the top six being completed by Bruce Birnie, Tom Weeden and Steven Procter.

Race Two, the first leg of the Senior B Final, saw Darren Cooper that the hole-shot and held the lead at the end of the opening lap by 1.2 seconds from Gareth Keys with Rad Hughes third, three seconds down.

By the end of the second lap Gareth Keys was ahead by 3.4 seconds from Cooper with Hughes still in third.

At half distance the gap had opened to 8.5 seconds and at the chequered flag Keys had a 20 second advantage over Darren Cooper with Rad Hughes third.

Race Three the opening leg of the SuperTwins had Ivan Lintin as a non-starter after the warm-up lap.

James Cowton took the hole-shot into Mere Hairpin, but it was Dean Harrison in front at the end of the lap with James Cowton second and James Neesom third – Then the red flag appeared. Paul Gartland and Daniel Frear had a coming together – both OK.

The restart was over five laps. Once again it was Cowton who got the hole-shot, but it was Craig Shirlaw to was in front at the end of the opening lap 0.432 of a second from Dean Harrison with James Neesom third, followed by James Cowton, Adrian Harrison and Keith Pringle.

A lap later and it Harrison in front, 1.5 seconds ahead of Shirlaw and Neesom.

Lap three the lead was up to 5.3 seconds as the top six remained the same.

The chequered flag gave Dean Harrison his second victory of the day ahead of Craig Shirlaw and James Neesom followed by James Cowton, Adrian Harrison and Keith Pringle.

Race Four the first of the Sidecars, Conrad Harrison got the hole-shot from pole position and held the lead at the end of the lap by 3.6 seconds from Carl Fenwick and Ian Bell.

A further two seconds was added to the lead at the end of the second lap with positions static.

Half distance saw Harrison with a 10.844 second lead.

Ian Bell moved into second place on the fourth lap some 13 seconds adrift of Harrison.

At the chequered flag it was Conrad Harrison and Lee Patterson from Ian and Carl Bell with Carl Fenwick and Will Moralee third.

Race Five, the Junior 600cc A Final 1st leg, once again had Dean Harrison in pole position, but it was James Cowton who got the hole-shot into Mere Hairpin.

At the end of the opening lap it was still Cowton half a second ahead of Daley Mathison and Dean Harrison third.

Lap three saw Dean Harrison take the lead by 0.820 of a second from Cowton with Mathison third.

Lap four and the gap was up to nearly 3 seconds and a lap later it was up to 4.5 seconds.

At the chequered flag it was Dean Harrison, James Cowton and Daley Mathison.

Race Six, the 600cc B Final first leg, saw Craig Shirlaw take a start to finish victory from James Hinchliffe and Julian Tillotson.

Race Seven the second leg of the SuperTwins with Dean Harrison again in pole position, but once again it was James Cowton to got the hole-shot into Mere Hairpin, but by the end of the lap it was Harrison who was in front by over one second. Cowton was second with Lintin third, only seven-tenths of a second between them.

Lap two whilst Harrison was still in front, Lintin had got past Cowton fore second just over one second in arrears of the leader with Cowton now third.

At half distance the gap between Harrison and Lintin was down to 0.230 of a second with Cowton five seconds back in third.

Lap four saw Ivan Lintin take the lead by 0.406 of a second from Harrison as Cowton held on to third 7.8 second down.

Lap five and Harrison was back in front by 0.077 of a second and at the flag it was Dean Harrison by 0.125 of a second from Ivan Linton with James Cowton third.

The final race of the day was the second Sidecar race which saw Conrad Harrison with a three second lead at the end of the opening lap of six. By lap two it had increased to 5.3 seconds.

The gap was similar at half distance.

Lap four and Harrison had added another second to his advantage.

Lap Five and close rivals Ian & Carl Bell retired allowing Dean Lindley and Robert Bell into second place and the gap was suddenly up to 15.6 seconds.

At the chequered flag it Was Conrad Harrison and Lee Patterson from Dean Lindley and Robert Bell with John and Jake Lowther third.
