Josh Brookes bided his time in the second MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship free practice session at Oulton Park to end the afternoon session in wet conditions fastest for Milwaukee Yamaha, edging out Howie Mainwaring in his final run.

Brookes had been just inside the top ten until a red flag towards the end of the session after Peter Hickman crashed at Druids sustaining a posterior rib fracture, he will be reviewed by the medical team again before he is able to take part in further sessions.

When the session resumed for the final four minutes of free practice two it produced a flurry of activity, and the Australian's last run saw him leap up the order. Brookes edged ahead of Mainwaring, who had also climbed the order in the final minutes as the pair pushed Tommy Bridewell back into third place after a strong session for the Tyco BMW rider.

The conditions played into the hands of Michael Rutter as he moved up into fourth for Gearlink Kawasaki ahead of Jakub Smrz, who had been running towards the top of the times for much of the afternoon session.

Shane 'Shakey' Byrne left it until the final 15 minutes of the session to head out onto the circuit and the PBM Kawasaki rider set the sixth fastest time ahead of James Westmoreland and Danny Buchan, who also broke inside the top ten in the final four minutes.

Richard Cooper and Broc Parkes, who had crashed his Milwaukee Yamaha at Hizzys earlier in the session, completed the top ten to push Ryuichi Kiyonari to eleventh place.
