Dean Harrison dominated the Gold Cup meeting at Olivers Mount

Dean Harrison retained the prestigious Gold Cup with a dominant display at Oliver’s Mount in Scarborough yesterday, where he chalked up a sensational six-timer.

The Silicone Engineering Kawasaki rider, who won the trophy for the first time in 2015 for Northern Ireland’s Mar-train Yamaha team, was the red-hot favourite to repeat the feat and the Bradford rider didn’t disappoint.

Harrison controlled the eight-lap invitation showpiece race to win by more than four seconds from Ivan Lintin on the Devitt RC Express Kawasaki, while Manx rider Dan Kneen notched a podium on the Mar-Train Yamaha R1 in third, 10.4 seconds behind the winner. Daley Mathison finished fourth on his BMW S1000RR ahead of Isle of Man TT great John McGuinness, who was riding his Bet Victor Honda Superstock machine. Ulsterman Michael Dunlop was a non-finisher on the Hawk Racing Buildbase BMW at the 2.4-mile woodland course in north Yorkshire.

On Saturday, Harrison won the opening leg of the Solo A race from Lintin and Derek Sheils (Shirlaw Kawasaki), with Dunlop sixth behind McGuinness.

He also won the second leg yesterday with the impressive Sheils finishing second ahead of Hegarty and Dunlop.

Harrison was simply unbeatable on the ZX-10R and claimed the spoils in Saturday’s Senior race from Lintin and McGuinness before adding another win in leg two yesterday, taking the flag from Sheils and Paul Gartland in the final race of the day.

He also managed a win on his Supersport machine in the second leg of the David Jefferies Cup, with Lintin victorious in Saturday’s opener.

Lincolnshire man Lintin won both legs of the Lee Pullen Supertwins Trophy with James Cowton and Tobermore’s Adam McLean third on each occasion.

Saintfield’s Davy Morgan had a successful weekend as the veteran racer won both Solo B races and the first Junior B Supersport race to seal a treble.

Gary Dunlop, making his race bow at Oliver’s Mount, finished sixth in the first Ultra-Lightweight race with William Dunlop finishing the second leg in third.

In the Sidecar class, Tim Reeves and Patrick Farrance won all three races for a hat-trick.

The 66th Steve Henshaw International Gold Cup marked 70 years of racing at Oliver’s Mount over the weekend, with Guy Martin among those participating in a special parade lap on his Pikes Peak turbocharged GSX-R1100.
