Chrome plating
We all know the problems Ethanol in our petrol causes older bikes, but did you know, the EU is also banning traditional chrome plating as from 2017.
The proposed substitute – trivalent chromium – is of no use, according to experts, stating that Trivalent isn’t resilient, doesn’t have the same weather protection,
and you can’t get the same bluey colour as you get with hexavalent chrome (the stuff platers use). This is going to affect decorative chromers, but it will not affect hard-chromers,  although the EU is proposing to ban nickel plating, which you need to put on the bright chrome. The only solution seems to be, is to start writing angry letters to politicians,  otherwise in a few years’ time, even if you can start your bike after a winter lay-up, the chrome may be so rusted that you’ll want to leave it in the garage.
So if you are planning a restoration, get your chrome plating done while you still can.

We will just have to get the Chinese to chrome plate our parts. They dont give two hoots.
They think the CE mark is for Chinese Export!

Then you might as well cut the middle man out and leave them rusty, the end result will be the same.

It's Ok we can just get it done in France, and pop into the Cafe for a fag whilst it is being done.

RE: Chrome plating
What is it about the plating process that the European Commission for Daft Decisions is objecting to?
We all know that it gives off some nasty fumes but so does Brussels and we are forced to take in what comes from there.

The same namby pamby ballache was/is had when 2-pack paint got the elbow, now we have paint for use on exterior vehicle surfaces that is water based, stupidly expensive, harder to apply and get a good finish. A ridiculous state of affairs.

RE: Chrome plating
Makes you wonder who thinks them up, the primer is solvent based the base coat water based and the clear/lacquer is solvent based so in the three stages it takes to paint two are still solvents mad it's all money making and the nanny state we've created.
