Practice and qualifying will take place as usual on Monday evening and Tuesday evening prior to Tuesday's two-race programme outlined above.

Michael Dunlop was the fastest man at Billown on the opening evening of practice for the Southern 100.

He lapped at 109.670 mph and was half-a-second quicker than Ivan Lintin with Jamie Coward third in the 1000cc class.

In the sidecars, Dave Molyneux and Dan Sayle were narrowly short of the lap record and a first lap over 100mph when they clocked 99.530 mph.

Tim Reeves and Patrick Farrance were second at 97.145 mph and the Birchalls third at 96.891 mph.

Dean Harrison was three seconds quicker in the 600cc class at 108.206 mph ahead of Ivan Lintin and Dan Kneen.

Ivan Lintin is top of the charts in the 650cc/250cc race at 101.571 mph with Rob Hodson second and James Cowton third.

Newcomer Darryl Tweed finished on top in the 125/400cc class at 93.421 mph just ahead of Dan Sayle on the Moto3 250 Honda.

There is more practice this evening with roads closing at 6.05pm and the first two races from 8pm - roads will reopen no later than 9.40pm.

Michael Dunlop won the 1000cc race on the opening night of racing at the Southern 100 on the Isle of Man.

The Hawk Racing BMW rider finished more than 12 seconds ahead of runner-up, Lincolnshire's Ivan Lintin, on the RC Express Kawasaki.

Manxman Dan Kneen was third for the Mar-Train Yamaha team on his return to action after injury.

The race was initially red-flagged on the first lap when Dean Harrison crashed out unhurt at Ballakeighan.

The Bradford rider did not compete in the re-start which was run over a reduced distance of six laps of the 4.25-mile Billown circuit, near Castletown.

Dunlop victory repeats his 2015 success

For 27-year old Dunlop the victory represented a repeat of his success in the same race last year.

"We'd been having some trouble with the bike for a couple of days but the boys worked really hard to sort it," said Dunlop after his triumph.

"I pushed on early in the race but was able to back off on the last couple of laps."

Jamie Coward, Dan Hegarty and debutant Alan Bonner made up the top six, with James Cowton best of the 600s.

Another newcomer, Darryl Tweed from Ballymoney romped to victory in the 400cc/125cc race.

The pole position man led throughout and won by 17.6 seconds from Manxman Dan Sayle, who was riding a Moto3 machine.

Sayle came home just 0.03 seconds ahead of Adrian Kershaw, who completed the podium positions.

Adam McLean from Magherafelt was the first 125cc finisher.


Racing continues on Wednesday evening, followed by a busy programme on Thursday morning and afternoon.

Guy Martin, Solo Champion for the past three years, is missing this week's event.

The Lincolnshire rider informed the organising club last weekend that he had not sufficiently recovered after completing the gruelling Tour Divide cycle race in the United States.

William Dunlop is also absent as he awaits the birth of his first child, due this week.

Michael Dunlop took his second victory of the Southern 100 meeting on the Isle of Man by winning Wednesday night's Senior race over the Billown circuit.

The Hawk Racing BMW rider enjoyed a massive advantage of 25 seconds over runner-up, Manxman Dan Kneen, by the chequered flag, with Ivan Lintin third.

Bradford's Dean Harrison pipped Lintin by 0.037 seconds to take the Supersport 600cc honours after a thrilling battle.

Lintin won the 650cc and Tim Reeves and Patrick Farrance the sidecar race one.

Dunlop's other success to date came in the curtain-raiser of the event, the 1000cc class on Tuesday night, in which he was a comfortable 12-second winner over Lincolnshire's RC Express Kawasaki rider Lintin.

After Wednesday's triumph over the 4.25-mile course in difficult conditions, Dunlop indicated that he had overcome the problems he had suffered with his machine earlier in the week.

"I had a couple of slides with the slick rear tyre on the damp patches but the bike is working really well. I got my head down and pushed on in the first lap, then just rode it steady from then on," said the 27-year-old Ballymoney rider.

Colin Stephenson completed the podium positions in the Supersport outing, with Rob Hodson and Welshman Rhys Hardisty occupying second and third places respectively in the 650cc Supertwins.

The concluding race of the evening, the sidecars, was brought to a halt by a red flag after some competitors had completed five of the scheduled six laps.

The result was taken after four laps, with Reeves and Farrance winning from Dave Molyneux and Dan Sayle, with brothers Ben and Tom Birchall third.

Eight races are scheduled for Thursday's race programme, including the feature Solo Championship event over nine laps, with a first prize of £3,400 for the winner.

In the absence of Guy Martin, who won the race for the last three years, Dunlop, victor in 2010 and 2011, will start as favourite.

Michael Dunlop has dominated this week's Superbike races at the Southern 100

Michael Dunlop won the feature Solo Championship race for the third time at the Southern 100 meeting on the Billown circuit in Castletown on Thursday.

The 27-year-old had 6.5 seconds to spare over runner-up Dean Harrison by the finish, with Ivan Lintin third.

Dunlop dominated the Superbike events throughout the week, taking three further victories on his Hawk BMW.

Bradford rider Harrison was a double Supersport 600cc winner, with Ivan Lintin sealing two Supertwins triumphs.

Dunlop was previously crowned Solo Champion in 2011 and 2012 and picked up the first prize of £3,400 after leading the nine-lap race from start to finish.

"That was the race I came to win, that's the one I wanted," said the delighted Ballymoney rider after his win in the main event.

Later in the day, Dunlop secured victory in the rescheduled Open race to make it a convincing four-timer for the week.

RC Express Kawasaki pilot Lintin followed up his 650cc win on Wednesday evening by taking the chequered flag from James Cowton and Rob Hodson on Thursday.

In the morning Supersport outing, Harrison was the victor by 5.5 seconds from Jamie Coward, with Cowton third and Lintin fourth.

Seamus Elliott saw off the challenge of fellow Ballymoney rider Darryl Tweed in the 400cc class.

A thrilling Sidecar Championship race saw three outfits break through the 100mph lap barrier for the first time in the history of the event on the sixth lap.

Tim Reeves and Patrick Farrance repeated their success of Wednesday night, ending up with a new lap record of 100.749mph.

Brothers Ben and Tom Birchall were second, with John Holden and Andrew Winkle third. Dave Molyneux and Dan Sayle retired.
