  • Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) World Record attempt to take place at the Bonneville Speedway, Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah – August 2016
  • TT legend and multiple speed world record holder Guy Martin confirmed as rider for 2016 Triumph world record attempt
  • The Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner powered by two Triumph Rocket III engines, producing a staggering 1,000 bhp
  • Global cloud applications provider Infor and iconic clothing brand Belstaff announced as 2016 title sponsors

Triumph Motorcycles, the iconic British motorcycle brand, has confirmed that it will return to the legendary salt flats of Bonneville, USA, in August 2016 to break the motorcycle world land speed record. Triumph’s aim is to exceed the current record that stands at 376.363 mph, using its purpose built 1,000 bhp Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner.

(Triumph are due to test with the bike this weekend. No date has been fixed for Guy’s record run, but we understand it will be run between August 21 and August 25).

Riding the purpose-built Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner over the measured mile will be Isle of Man TT racer and multiple speed record holder Guy Martin. Title partner for Triumph’s 2016 record attempt will be global cloud applications provider Infor with further support from iconic clothing brand Belstaff.

The Triumph Infor Rocket features a carbon Kevlar monocoque construction with two turbocharged Triumph Rocket III engines producing a combined 1,000 bhp at 9,000 rpm. The motorcycle is 25.5 feet long, 2 feet wide and 3 feet tall. Powered by methanol fuel, the bike is competing in the Division C (streamlined motorcycle) category.

Triumph has a history of breaking the land speed record, holding the title of ‘World’s Fastest Motorcycle’ between 1955 to 1970*. The record-breaking Triumph Streamliners included: Devil’s Arrow, Texas Cee-gar, Dudek Streamliner and Gyronaut X1, the former achieving a top speed of 245.667 mph (395.28 km/h). Today’s record, held by Rocky Robinson since 2010 riding the Top Oil-Ack Attack streamliner, sits at 376.363 mph (605.697 km/h).

Guy Martin commented:

“I can’t wait to take the Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner onto the salt at Bonneville for the first time this summer. The Triumph engineers have built an amazing machine, giving us the very best chance to beat the two-wheeled land speed record.”

The iconic Bonneville name was conceived following Johnny Allen’s land-speed record runs at the Salt Flats in September 1956, when he reached the record breaking speed of 193.72 mph. The first T120 Bonneville model was unveiled at the Earls Court Bike Show and went on sale in 1959.

Up to date news of this is very thin on the ground, perhaps the idea is to watch the TV show?
Also, the displacement of the 2 x Triumph Rocket engined projectile is given as "2970cc combined - 1485cc per engine" on the Triumph website, have they been sleeved down? perhaps to be under 3000cc? seems strange that's all!

Wonder how long his career will last now that he has given up racing as all of his previous programmes have been based around the TT.

Tuesday 9th August Update

After the high winds of yesterday the team were greeted with near perfect conditions as dawn broke on the fifth day. As the sun began to rise above the horizon spirits were high within the team as they carried out preparations for the day’s first run.

Day five at Bonneville marked a number of major milestones for the team and land speed project as a whole. One of these being the first deployment of the Triumph Infor Rocket Streamline’s parachute, a vital tool that helps safely control the braking of the streamliner during high speed passes.

With the parachute fitted it was also time to remove the large outrigger support wheels, following the successful runs of the previous days and the control that Guy had continued to show on each pass. These milestones marked the beginning of TT legend Guy Martin’s high speed testing runs in Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner.

After an initial towed run to familiarise Guy with the new balance of the streamliner, he was turned around at the seven mile mark and given the thumbs up for his first solo run of the day. Accelerating away from line Guy began to build the speed slowly, as the pace increased the Streamliner continued to glide gracefully across the salt sitting straight as an arrow and picking up speed with each mile marker passed. Hitting the two mile marker Guy slowed and released the parachute coming to a controlled stop just a short distance from the team’s base on the salt.

With confidence high within the team after the first successful run, Crew Chief and Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner designer Matt Markstaller and his team worked quickly to check over the bike before head back for another run. With each pass of the day Guy continued to improve pushing the streamliner a little harder each time, achieving a faster speed on each run he made. With several high speed passes successfully undertaken and with the temperature and wind speed rising the team called time on their runs just after lunchtime, delighted with the day’s performance. The rest of the afternoon saw the team begin to make preparations for the next day, which will be the last day of testing on the salt for the Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner this week.

TT Legend Guy Martin pilots the Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner to become the fastest ever Triumph achieving 274.2 mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats

The Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner has become the world’s fastest ever Triumph by achieving a speed of 274.2 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats on 8 August, 2016. Piloted by TT legend Guy Martin, the streamliner smashed the previous official Triumph record that stood at 245.667 mph as well as the unofficial Triumph Record of 264mph, both set by Bob Leppan, in the Gyronaut X-1.

Near perfect conditions greeted the team on the final day of the team’s land speed practice week. With confidence high after a successful number of days running on the salt at Bonneville the team’s goal for the day with the Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner was the Triumph record.

Just after 8:30am Guy Martin and the team set off on the first run of the day, after a steady start, Guy accelerated the sleek looking streamliner to a staggering 274.2 mph, rewriting Triumph history in the process. Just after the two mile marker Guy came to a controlled stop near to the team’s base camp to be greeted by the news that he had broken the 46 year old Triumph record.

Today’s record run is further proof of Guy’s growing confidence on the salt and commitment to breaking the World two wheeled Land Speed record. Throughout the week Guy has continued to impress everyone within the team with the speed in which he has been able to master the Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner on the salt. Each time Guy has sat in the streamliner on the salt he has been able to achieve the goals set by Crew Chief and the Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner designer Matt Markstaller and his team with the required level of control.

When asked about becoming the fastest ever Triumph record holder Guy commented:

“It’s good and we are moving in the right direction, but it is just one step on the way to what me and the team are here to do.”

Triumph has a history of breaking the land speed record, holding the title of ‘World's Fastest Motorcycle’ between 1955 to 1970*. The record-breaking Triumph Streamliners included: Devil's Arrow, Texas Cee-gar, Dudek Streamliner and Gyronaut X1, the former achieving a top speed of 245.667 mph (395.28 km/h). Today's record, held by Rocky Robinson since 2010 riding the Top Oil-Ack Attack streamliner, sits at 376.363 mph (605.697 km/h).

"news of this is very thin"
Na Na Na mate you have to get with it and join Twitter & Facebook...
Best I cud find was over at Landracing.com live chat,

Landrover54 13 days ago
Does anyone know how the Triumph streamliner went?

MTILTON 13 days ago
@Landrover54 I talked with Mic on the crew everyday till yesterday, some runs into higher 200s rough track,
traction issues, If can go to rev limiter 465 mph.

They're gonna go in mid September "weather permitting" for better salt by the UK/USA Triumph site.

About the cylinders, the class that they are in is, Type V - Cyl. 3+ - over 2500cc to 3000cc

Where their at right now ain't much to bang the drum so to say, but I guess it is a 'Training Session' for the "Adventurous" Guy Martin.

Heck where their at now they beat out the KillaCycle at 242.973 mph *(Pending Ratification by the FIM/CCR), or a CBR1000RR at 262.471 mph, still got a long way to go IMO, but I guess that'll make for more episodes!    Gimmefive

About his shows, Boat show = too gay, Building Britian = Zzzzzzzzz, Speed show MX Bike with pontoons on water = Stoopid waste of time, Guy Martin Pikes Peak = OK, Guys Wall Of Death Live = Yawn, Haven't watched the plane shows, may get deleted before I watch if I need the space, just my opinion btw.
"A few yrs ago they screwed up a perfectly good working website just because they want to be 'modern' and now we have a sluggish ugly problematic and feature lacking website. but hey, its modern..., old sites are always better".
