Massingberd-Mundy Cadwell Sidecar Revival delivers nostalgia, drama and maximum championship points for Kershaw/Clark.
Glorious weather all weekend, in the most picturesque of settings helped to make the Cadwell Sidecar Revival a huge success. However the meeting was marred by incidents in three of the four championship races which left at least three crews needing hospital treatment. RKB-F1 would like to extend best wishes for a speedy recovery for all involved in the events.
Qualifying
Weather conditions were perfect for qualifying, and most of the crews relished being back at Cadwell Park. As expected, the series leaders Steve Kershaw and Stuart Clark clinched pole position with a time of 1.33.295, ahead of the very rapid Todd Ellis/Chaz Richardson and Phil Bell/Stuart Ramsay. Former Champions Ricky Stevens and Ryan Charlwood were fourth in their first Cadwell outing since going 600cc. The top six were split by just over four seconds, so racing would be close.
Race One
A brilliant start by Gary Bryan and Phil Hyde saw them lead the first lap chased by Todd Ellis/Chaz Richardson and the pole sitters Kershaw and Clark. These three had the edge over Phil Bell and Stuart Ramsay who slotted into fourth. They would eventually make it through to finish third, but not after race-long tussle with the fiery 600 of Ellis. Once past Gary Bryan, Steve Kershaw never looked back and stretched the lead to win comfortably. Behind though, Bell and Ellis passed and re-passed with this scrap running to the flag with the 600 of Ellis getting the verdict.
Result
1/ Kershaw/Clarke, 2/ Ellis/Richardson, 3/ Bell/Ramsay, 4/ Bryan/Hyde, 5/ Stevens/Charlwood, 6/ Kirk/Smithies, 7/ Horspole/Connell, 8/ Guy/Pilmoor-Brady
Race Two
A big crash on the opening lap resulted in a red flag and a restart. Crews involved, and therefore missing, included Bell/Ramsay, Kirk/Smithies, Stevens/Charlwood, and Guy/Pilmoor Brady. Rupert Archer and Tom Bryant also failed to make the restart. This was a reverse grid format, and the new race race ran over five laps. It gave Gary Bryan and Phil Hyde the chance to really build a lead, but eventually the flying Scotsmen Kershaw and Clark overhauled them. Gary Horspole and James Connell had their first podium. In a brilliant fourth came Simon Gilbert and Jack Tritton for Draper Racing. Andy Peach and Ken Edwards were plagued with gearbox problems, but made it home ninth.
Result
1/ Kershaw/Clark, 2/ Bryan/Hyde, 3/ Horspole/Connell, 4/ Gilbert/Tritton, 5/ Founds/Walmsley, 6/ Ellis/Richardson, 7/ Nicholls/Cole, 8/ Gray/Pitt
Race Three
This time Dean Nicholls and Kenny Cole took the hole-shot and led on lap one. Again the reverse grid made for exciting racing and Ricky Stevens was going better with reserve passenger Justin Sharp. It was thrilling as the fast men carved through, with Kershaw/Clark again making it all the way, with the family affair of Ellis and Bryan completing the podium. Ricky Stevens and Justin Sharp made a very creditable fourth place. Despite the rate of attrition, there were fifteen finishers.
Result
1/ Kershaw/Clark, 2/ Ellis/Richardson, 3/ Bryan/Hyde, 4/ Stevens/Sharp 5/ Founds/Walmsley, 6/Horspole/Connell, 7/ Gilbert/Tritton, 8/ Peach/Edwards.
Race Four
Again, the reverse grid opened opportunities, and Gary Horspole/James Connell made the most of them. They carved out a great lead while Kershaw, Ellis and Bryan were making progress through the pack. Brian Gray and Jason Pitt, have raced all day in the Classic outfit as well, had a personal best this weekend bringing it home in fourth. Thirteen finishers, in the last race of what had been a tough and emotional weekend, once more saw the Scots Kershaw and Clark on the top step. Horspole and Connell claimed their second podium.
